Church to protest Comic-Con because of 'idol worship' (Westboro Baptist Church)
SciFi Wire ^ | 07/09/2010 | staff

The Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is headed by Fred Phelps and which has made headlines over the past few years for a series of protests of events such as the funerals of Meet the Press host Tim Russert (because of his Catholicism and what they termed his "tolerance of homosexuality") and Jerry Falwell (whom they termed a "false prophet') and perhaps most notably the funerals of American servicemen killed overseas, have announced that they plan to picket the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con from 1:15 pm to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 22.

The reason they're going to protest the con? We think it's best described in their own words, as posted on their website:

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

You asked me to name an anti-Mormon here.

I think you might be interested in one recent quote I found on FR. It's an example of some people's narrow-mindedness and bigotry. It's really off the wall:

"The internet age has shed light on mormonism. The "general public" has a much better understanding of the cult of mormonism because of it.

I have two equally valid reasons to not vote for Romney, his liberalism and his cultism."

If someone thinks that's not anti-Mormon, they are blind.

And let's see, it was written by.... YOU!

So WBC hates Jews, Catholics, baseball, fallen military heroes, comic books and pop music. With all the funeral protesting of public figures (Tim Russert’s funeral, really?), it’s worth noting they didn’t protest at The Swimmer’s funeral. Their agenda is so transparent. One can hope they fade away when their Phelps messiah passes on to his eternal reward in a very hot place.

If you ever get a chance, read Phelps’ bio.

It reads like a bad novel, but it’s all true.

That's anti mormonism and it's sad that you don't know the difference. Mormonism is a cult. That's not anti mormon, that's antimormonism and it's the truth.

I wonder if our resident Mormon haters are Westboro associates

Seiously? Show me one post just one where mormons are hated?

However, mormonISM is as much Christian as what the westboro people teach.

Saying it's Ok to be into antimormonism but that does not make you anti-mormon is like saying that you hate Islamic Wahhabi Fundamentalism, but IED planters are Ok.

VERY twisted logic... and an attempt to hide bigotry...

By the way, how are you on Roman Catholics?

I looked at the quote in #61 and I must be blind because how is that anti-mormon. It very clearly states anti-mormonISM.

I read it but it makes no sense.

One of the dumber comparisons I've ever seen posted. I pray for Mormons and hate Mormonism.

VERY twisted logic... and an attempt to hide bigotry...

Hurl bigot at me all you want, I still pray that Mormons flee from the perverted cult and its false prophet.

By the way, how are you on Roman Catholics?

How do you know that I'm not Catholic?

The catholic Church does not accept Mormonism as a Christian religion nor does it accept Mormon Baptism.

I don't state it as fact but I believe the Catholic church has defined Mormonism as a cult. "svcw" may be able to confirm that or tell me if I'm wrong.

My understanding is that nearly every Christian church views mormonism as a cult. So you are not wrong.

Yep, I sure must be “narrowly focused in my bigoted narrow-mindedness” so much that I missed that I’ve been married to an active mormon for over 20 years. How could I not see it? How did I miss that with such a “narrow focus”?

I sure am a mormon hater. Woo Boy, glad you all cleared that up for me, I was getting confused there for a minute.

How could one not agree with a religion yet be married to a member of that religion? You gotta be a “narrow minded bigot” I guess.

Does this confuse you? Quoting your self to prove a point which makes no sense, makes no sense.
I guess MB26 understands but I don’t get the point. Oh well.
