Governors Voice Grave Concerns on Immigration (Dems in Panic Over Obama's War on Arizona)

BOSTON — In a private meeting with White House officials this weekend, Democratic governors voiced deep anxiety about the Obama administration’s suit against Arizona’s new immigration law, worrying that it could cost a vulnerable Democratic Party in the fall elections.

While the weak economy dominated the official agenda at the summer meeting here of the National Governors Association, concern over immigration policy pervaded the closed-door session between Democratic governors and White House officials and simmered throughout the three-day event.

At the Democrats’ meeting on Saturday, some governors bemoaned the timing of the Justice Department lawsuit, according to two governors who spoke anonymously because the discussion was private.

“Universally the governors are saying, ‘We’ve got to talk about jobs,’ ” Gov. Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, a Democrat, said in an interview. “And all of a sudden we have immigration going on.”

He added, “It is such a toxic subject, such an important time for Democrats.”

“I might have chosen both a different tack and a different time,” said Gov. Bill Ritter Jr. of Colorado, a Democrat who was facing a tough fight for re-election and pulled out of the race earlier this year. “This is an issue that divides us politically, and I’m hopeful that their strategy doesn’t do that in a way that makes it more difficult for candidates to get elected, particularly in the West.”

Immigration was not the only topic at the Saturday meeting between Democratic governors and two White House officials — Patrick Gaspard, Mr. Obama’s political director, and Cecilia Munoz, director of intergovernmental affairs. But several governors, including Christine Gregoire of Washington, said it was a particularly heated issue.

The D-Govs should have been concerned that their party was taken over by lefty socialist/progressives with a red diaper baby as the party leader.

Little late now.

Tough luck Democrats. You put all of your faith on this know-nothing who only cares about his own legacy. He’ll bring down the whole Democrat party before he admits he made a mistake.

Look who is running the WH. Two far far left wing Marxists.
Read up on Munoz and Gespard and you will be packing your families bags for Australia .

The entire Obama team is infested by Marxists or Black Muslims / Black Revolutionaries Marxists.

My brother in law had the misfortune to have to meet the Marxists back ion the spring. He warned us all at a family gathering that the Marxist was one the very creepy people surrounded by an black staff ! He thought they were all
Black Muslims.

We have dedicated American hater Marxists running the WH !

Thanks to all the Freepers who promoted the grand idea to sit out the Nov 2008 election.

I've said before and this further proves that this immigration battle isn't to stoke the base for this November but rather to keep importing voters for future Novembers.

‘We’ve got to talk about jobs,' [said] Gov. Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, a Democrat.

That's all Democrats do...just yak, yak, yak and pass America-killing, freedom-killing and jobs-killing laws. They always confuse talking with doing constructive things that help our nation. What a loser.

This article is an interesting study in political calculus.

I suppose the Obama administration's calculus would have been something along the lines of tapping into the usual middle/left fear of Republicans -- something that Democrats have used to great effect over the past 30 years or so. And possibly they figured their black president could add an extra level of fear.

I suspect that particular well has pretty well been tapped out; and I'm pretty sure the beltway types have no clear sense of the real concerns among the public (especially in the west) about illegal immigration. Add to that the Obama teams really astonishing tin ear, and you've got trouble.

Even if ideas for handling it are different; even if one is very concerned about the possibility of discrimination and such ... the lawsuit finds itself opposed to the very real concerns about immigration.

IMO, although the basis of the suit (federal vs. state jurisdiction) is sound, the governors have sensed that it is also a campaign ploy -- and they're probably right. And if so, and if it's more widely seen as that, Obama's tin ear will turn out to be very costly.

The Obamanation and the leadership of the Democratic party are focusing on the immigration issue because they honestly think that it will be a winning issue.

Nothing more.

I think that it will be a losing issue for them, but we’ll know for sure come November.

Every rat governor is promoting sanctuary policies. They are fully in agreement with our dear leader on his defacto amnesty policy. They just do not like the light burning on their policies. They prefer stealth sanctuary policies.

Rather than ferreting out corruption and organized crime, the mixed up Eric Holder is attacking states. Wouldn’t be surprised if he resigns soon to “spend more time with his family.” He just isn’t up to the job.
