The man shot by police outside a Summerlin Costco store on Saturday was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a master's degree from Duke University, friends said.

Army veteran Erik Scott, 39, was at the store near Charleston Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway with his girlfriend before three officers fatally shot him in a confrontation.

lots of conflicting reports on this one so far.....

Yes, but they do seem to be falling into a pattern. There is (1) the cops' version of what happened versus (2) everyone else who saw it.

One witness interviewed Saturday and three others interviewed Sunday by the Review-Journal gave accounts that differed from what police described.

Surprise, surprise, surprise! A little extrajudicial punishment from The Only Ones.

Hey there,

Yeah, this is the costco I go to at least once a month when I do my monthly shopping after driving in from Pahrump.

I have NEVER seen a no weapons sign in the place, and since I have had my permit have carried in there many a time, never was an issue.

I am kind of shocked that we have not seen at least SOME video tape of some kind on the news with the story the way its sounding. One would think that they would have whipped up a quick video of the guy “tearing up the place” to protect the story by now..

Its all very sad and very strange. Its also starting to get national attention.

If he was such a crazy man with a gun, how come none of the other shoppers seemed to notice? How was it that he filed out the door with the rest of the shoppers? It makes absolutely no sense! And then 3 cops unload with a crowd around?

This is BAD!

In Maine last week:

Stevens said a tall, thin, older man wearing a plaid shirt was walking out of the woods carrying a gun. Stevens said the man appeared to be headed toward a pickup, as a Maine Game Warden and Togus police officer arrived.

"It was just like he was casually walking down the trail," Stevens said.

The wardens and Togus officer ordered the man to drop his weapon, Stevens said.

A few moments later there was a series of shots, Stevens said. He said one of the bullets appeared to hit the unidentified man in the neck and head area.

When cops attack.

Just more proof of my theory that there are people who would make exceptional policemen; whose senses of judgement, discretion, comportment, maturity, responsibility, are well-honed and reliable.

The problem is that very, very few of them are drawn to "The Job." Which leaves us with the trigger happy, social misfit Barney Fifes, Buford Pussers and Marquis de Sades. At least half of them should be locked up for years just for applying for "The Job" for the wrong reasons.

Ticking time bombs with little, twisted brains, no moral compass, but with a gun that will kill you if somebody doesn't get them first. Scarey.

Was Scott a white boy? If so, expect Eric Holder to order the case dropped.

;-/

Under general circumstances...

If you get challenged by the police when you’re carrying, don’t follow any order that requires you to put your hands on or anywhere near your weapon.

Raise you hands up over your head with your fingers spread and keep them there.

Better to be roughed up a bit than to be shot dead.

I am so sorry for the loss of your cousin, especially under these circumstances. Here’s hoping he is honored as a hero for his service in our Armed Forces.

Also proof that when it comes to the 2nd amendment, the police are NOT your friend.

This guy was a freaking West Point grad and distinguished army veteran and years of firearms training. Just where does that put your average Joe with a CCW permit?

“A second anonymous witness said Sunday he saw Scott pull up his shirt and turn toward the shouting officer.”

Sounds like he was pulling up his shirt to reveal his gun to the police in a non-confrontational way and the moron cops were a little trigger happy.

I’ve seen signs posted regarding Costco’s no gun policy at our local (New Mexico) but that’s because I was aware of the policy before hand and was looking for them. If you’re concentrating on getting a hundred roll toliet paper pack, you’d miss them for sure.

I’m not up on NV laws, but in NM if it’s posted no firearms, or a representative of the business tells you no firearms, having a CCW doesn’t matter. You leave you piece outside.

Sorry for the confusion - not my cousin, but I was quoting what his cousin posted to one of the newspaper websites.

Yes, but they do seem to be falling into a pattern. There is (1) the cops' version of what happened versus (2) everyone else who saw it.

Believe me, I know. I've been here about ten years and have seen my share, but I'll wait until all of the facts come out first.

If true, that’s not a “tragedy”; it’s a crime. It’s just that in this instance the criminals were wearing badges.

“...and called the cops to report him as if he were a “terrorist.”

.
I carry legally but what you just said makes me think that concealed carry may have its own risk because of the constant terrorist threat we live with. There are many law-abiding citizens who feel ill at ease when they see a concealed gun when they do not know the carrier’s background.

Unsurprising reaction by the cops.

In Midland, TX (hardly a liberal local), a guy took his rifle up to his office and some idiot freaked.

The SWAT team and hostage people came and completely went bonkers.

Completely legal, no danger -— except to the guy carrying his own rifle.

I note in the story, the cops have failed to return the man’s weapons.
