OAKLAND, Calif. — A California man arrested after a freeway shootout with authorities was planning to attack people at the American Civil Liberties Union and another nonprofit group, authorities said Tuesday.

Byron Williams, 45, was upset with the ACLU and Tides Foundation for their political views, Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason said.

Williams told investigators he was on his way to San Francisco late Saturday when California Highway Patrol officers pulled him over on Interstate 580.

Authorities say Williams, wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with three guns, opened fire.

The media is just going to go nuts over this. I’m already sure that he’s a member of the TEA party (whether he is or not).

I guess they don’t call CA “the land of fruit and nuts” for nothing.

Not just “land of nuts and fruits”, it is “Nuts, fruits, and flakes”.

Does anyone know why he was stopped by the LEO’s?

The FBI executed a search warrant at his mother's house in Groveland today. Neighbors and townspeople have said they either didn't know the Williams or barely knew them.

I kinda doubt that people that reclusive were active in the TEA party, but agree the attempt will be made to paint them that way.

Speeding & weaving in traffic is what CHP has said. I also saw one report that said his rifle was visible on the passenger seat of his pickup, so someone may have alerted the police.

He was also wearing body armor so in that sense he was appropriately dressed for a night out in Oakland.

Sounds like a nut case / loser.

Williams, 45, was arrested near his family’s Groveland home in 2001 for drunken driving, but never turned up for his court date, said Sgt. Jeff Wilson of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department. Outside that, Wilson said, local law enforcement had never heard of the man.

After that, Williams was wanted on a warrant for seven years, Wilson said.

The man was such a hermetic presence in the town that almost no one noticed when he was arrested for robbing a bank in Chowchilla in 2002 and went to prison until his release three years ago. Sheriff’s deputies finally found him and served that failure-to-appear warrant in 2008 and didn’t hear from him again until last year, Wilson said, when Williams started and promptly lost a bar fight at the local pub, the Iron Door Saloon.

“He got drunk, got in a fight with somebody, and he got his butt whooped,” Wilson said. “He’s not very good at this stuff.”

Williams came in alone the night of the fight, a bar employee said, and was banned from the premises for becoming aggressive with a bartender.

Williams was hospitalized after the shooting with gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening, and was arraigned Tuesday in Oakland on multiple felonies, including several counts of attempted murder. Investigators said he’d been drunk and on his way to San Francisco to kill liberal activists at the American Civil Liberties Union and the Tides Foundation when he was pulled over.

It’s not clear why those two organizations were targeted except that conservative media commentators often accuse them of having left-wing agendas.

On a June 13 show on Fox News, host Glenn Beck said the Tides Foundation was an organization “using failing capitalism to destroy it.”

Still blaming Beck:

Salon.com Headline (7/27/10):

“Glenn Beck’s incendiary angst dangerously close to having a body count....The pundit’s crusade against the Tides Foundation is the latest in a line of tirades that have led to violence “

excerpt:

....”So, yes, Beck has done all he can to scare the hell out of people about the Tides Foundation and “turn the light of day” onto an organization that actually facilitates nonprofit giving.

And guess what? Everybody in America would have found out about the Tides Foundation last week if Byron Williams had had his way. He’s the right-wing, government-hating, gun-toting nut who strapped on his body armor, stocked a pickup truck with guns and ammo, and set off up the California coast to San Francisco in order to start killing employees at the previously obscure Tides Foundation in hopes of sparking a political revolution.”....

If you are over 30 and still live with your mother you should be required to register with the authorities.
