Red vs. blue family in black and white
The Washington Times ^ | July 25, 2010 | Cheryl Wetzstein

Young parents Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston may have gotten engaged again recently, but they are still a quintessential "red" family trying to swim against the tide of family change, say two family law professors who have launched a debate about "red" and "blue" American families.

The 2004 and 2008 elections showed a divided America — and that division extends even to families, Naomi Cahn and June Carbone write in their book, "Red Families v. Blue Families: Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture."

In blue states, families tend to be well-educated, have high-paying jobs, be tolerant of diversity and be politically liberal. They marry later in life, have children in wedlock and are dedicated co-parents.

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are good examples of this "blue" paradigm, Ms. Cahn, who teaches at George Washington University, and Ms. Carbone, who teaches at the University of Missouri, said at a recent event at the New America Foundation think tank.

Red-state families, however, seem to be stuck in a time warp — they tend to be more strict in their religious beliefs and aspire to abstinence until marriage and marriage for life. But they often fall short of these goals: Red states have high rates of teen births, young ("shotgun") marriages and divorce. Red-state families are also less likely to be college graduates, get top jobs or create households where husbands and wives share equally in parenting and chores.

This shows that "blue" families have adjusted to the evolution of America's family culture, while "red" families have not, Ms. Cahn and Ms. Carbone said.

Those naughty red state hicks! Actually trying to make a go of marriage and keeping the kids, rather than living blithely together and skipping off to the nearest abortuary if there is a “whoops.”

In blue states

That is the fatal flaw in the argument. Here in "blue state" Michigan, less than 10 of our 83 counties are consistent democrat strongholds with another half dozen flipping back and forth from one election to the next.

They got it backwards as to red and blue families.

The Obamas are an example?
Obama was raised and mentored by Muslims, communists and America haters. He’s a Marxist/Muslim alien usurper.
He hates everything America stands for- as does big MO.

Well, according to this, my wife and I fit the “blue” family model, but we’re both conservatives...(married later in life, kids in wedlock, etc)...

Huh, so all of those teen moms in the ghetto and on welfare and the government dole are actually conservatives and vote for pubbies. Never knew that. What an illuminating study...</sarcasm>

This shows that "blue" families have adjusted to the evolution of America's family cultureto socialism and marxism, while "red" families have not...

Fixed it. IOW "red" families are smart enough not to fall for the BIG LIE! It does appear the "blue" families would be better off to stay away from the institutes of higher learning since this is the best they can do!

Oh, I see. Blue state family - perfect in every way, no problems. Red state families - all white redneck cracker trailer park trash.

No stereotyping in this article! Snort.

The elites love to posit that liberals are successful and conservatives are unsuccessful ... ‘Blue states’ are blue because they have millions who are dependent upon the government, and that’s not a success story.

In blue states, families tend to be well-educated, have high-paying jobs, be tolerant of diversity...marry later in life, have children in wedlock and are dedicated co-parents.

Does this also apply to the massive underclass in blue cities? Have these authors looked at their graduation rates? Unemployment rates and patterns of employment? Close-minded, reflexive self-segregation and bloc-vote for the Democrat Party? Out-of-wedlock birth rate? Rate of single-parent or no-parent households? Or is this underclass being transferred to the red column to fit into the authors' preconceptions?

Article is a hot, steaming load of BS.

This was satire, right?

The only people I know that fit that mold are a relatively small percentage of suburbanites. This small percentage of busybody collectivist elitists exert a political power far out of proportion to their numbers, because of their busybody, holier-than-thou, we-know-what’s-best-for-you political activism.

The “red” voters in these areas are far more tolerant than their “blue” neighbors, willing to live-and-let-live and to mind their own business, and are therefore less politically active.

However, the overwhelming preponderance of “blue” voters is concentrated among the inner city “monorities”. They have out-of-wedlock birth rate approaching 80%, with similar high school dropout rates!

As soon as the “red” voters, the “hoi poloi”, exhibit any political activism, their “blue” neighbors denounce them as ignorant, intolerant, bigoted throwbacks.

That’s the “tolerance” expressed by the “blues” and their smarmy leadership.

They are a study in hypocrisy and cynicism.

i saw this in my law school alma mater magazine this past weekend [one of the authors is a GW law prof] and i was outraged at the condescension. My husband and i are both lawyers, married at ages 29 and 31, have 3 coddled teen/young adult kids all of whom are tomato red. these people cannot see beyond their own preconceived ideas.

I live in an extreme red/blue family:

1) Gay left wing, anti Christian cousin
2) militant Anti-gun cousin
3) pro choice liberal Aunt who teaches at a Christian school
4) ultra feminist mom—ironically she’s very PRO-LIFE
5) GOP supporting, Roman Catholic retired military dad
6) 25 years on welfare sister
7) single mother, democrat voting sister
8) social justice seeking democrat cousin
9) blue dog conservative WW2 veteran Grandfather
10) Ron Paul supporting uncle
11) hard core conservative, pro military step siblings
12) spaced out heroin addict cousin
13) ‘Communism would work if we had the right leaders in charge’-cousin.
14) Traditional Conservative step mother worn out from family bickering
15) Alcoholic, racist step father who hates blacks and queers as much as lefties

Yeah, family gatherings with this motley group occur about as frequent as a conservative thought passes thru Barrack Obama’s brain.
