NEW YORK CITY -- President Obama waded into the national race debate in an unlikely setting and with an unusual choice of words: telling daytime talk show hosts that African-Americans are “sort of a mongrel people.”

The president appeared on ABC’s morning talk show “The View” Thursday, where he talked about the forced resignation of Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod, his experience with race and his roots.

When asked about his background, which includes a black father and white mother, Obama said of African-Americans: "We are sort of a mongrel people."

"I mean we're all kinds of mixed up," Obama said. "That's actually true of white people as well, but we just know more about it."

The president did not appear to be making an inflamatory remark with his statement. The definition of mongrel as an adjective is defined as "of mixed breed, nature, or origin," according to dictionary.com.

IMO, one of our biggest mistakes was allowing Progressives to control the conversation by labeling Obama as ‘black’ or ‘african-american’, ignoring the FACT that his mother was lily white. As a result, at every opportunity they have been able to play the race card. How can my objection to him be labeled ‘racist’ when the man is half white?

IMO, it is completely racist to ignore that he IS half white. Obama is our first BI-RACIAL President and should have been labeled as such from the get go.... period. But then, I suppose we’d have been labeled racist for pointing out the obvious.

Show tunes? Oy! Let's recap... we elected a guy named Clinton who had an absentee father and tried to get into every woman he could find. Which means that he inherently thinks of himself as superior to us.

True enough of Americans as a whole. Doesn’t offend me in the least, but if a white person or Republican had said it all hell would break loose.

Understandably, since there are some very negative connotations to the word "mongrel" - and people speaking about groups they belong to have far more latitude to say negative things than when they're talking about a group they don't belong to.

But agree completely about it being true enough of all Americans. One of my room-mates in my freshman year of college - he was from Nigeria - pointed this out to me: most American blacks don't look like Africans born in sub-Saharan Africa. They tend to be lighter skinned and their facial features aren't the same as Africans. And I'd guess many people of European or any other descent whose ancestors came here sufficiently long ago have some combination of racial heritages in them.

Given enough time and modern transportation, the human race will probably become a uniform shade of light brown at some point and we can fight over other stuff.
