NZ judge orders 'odd' name change (9-year-old named 'Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii')

A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing.

He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples.

Officials had blocked Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit, he said, but Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay had been allowed.

One mother wanted to name her child O.crnia using text language, but was later persuaded to use Oceania, he said.

'Social handicap'

The ruling, in the city of New Plymouth on the North Island, was handed down in February but only made public now.

The name issue emerged during a custody hearing for the young girl - who had refused to tell her friends her name and went simply by "K".

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," Judge Murfitt wrote.

“The baby’s name was Born Dancin’. We gave the baby some of our wine, red, whites and blue, and spoke seriously to her. But it didn’t do any good. “

It is ‘Oceania’ in cell phone text language (”OH-SEE-ARR-NI-ARR”)

It wasn’t the name itself that was the problem, it was the way this woman chose to spell it. Fortunately she agreed to be persuaded to a more conventional spelling.

These names should only be allowed if at the same time the parent’s name is changed to “Attention-Craving Nitwit” or “Insensitive and Adolescent Parent”.

Better to name him Nad so when he’s out playing a game of football or baseball you can yell, “Go Nad! Go Nad!”

A pox on, and a steel-toed boot to the teeth to egomanicac parents that use their child and their name as some public statement or personal joke.

Did your brother precede or follow Zappa’s naming his kids Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva?

I guess this ruling puts a damper on naming my kids after the Planets of the Solar System.

I think you'd be fine with Venus, but might run into trouble with Pluto.

“Midnight Chardonnay”

That’s actually kind of cool.

I knew a woman named Raven (unfortunately she was very blonde or it would have been perfect), and someone I know named their girl Alchemy.

I don’t really have a problem with what people name their children. To me it is a sign of a free society and yes there will be some people who take it to extremes.

I knew a lady that lived in Bulgaria under communist rule. She said that when you had a baby the government would bring you a list of names you could pick from.

Remember as conservatives we are supposed to be against government oppression and intrusion.

Still, there is a difference between a NAME and a string of words or an object. Naming a kid Bed Spread, or Fuel Injection should not be allowed, or only allowed for a middle name.

Personally, as a conservative, I believe in minimal government intrusion - not none at all. There is a difference.
