WASHINGTON--Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha returned from Spain on Sunday, a vacation at a lavish hotel on the Mediterranean coast that triggered her first controversy since becoming first lady. I'm told she made the trip because she promised one of her closest friends, a longtime Chicago pal who just lost her father, she would spend time with her.

So why did Mrs. Obama go to Spain at this time? She's not tone-deaf politically. What was behind the "mother-daughter" vacation?
A White House source told me that Blanchard's father passed away and Mrs. Obama was not able to make the funeral at the beginning of July. Blanchard had promised her daughter she would take her to Spain for her birthday. She asked Mrs. Obama and Sasha to come with. (Malia is at overnight camp.)
"She felt it was important as a dear friend to do this," I was told.

It’s bizarre, you have Queen Elizabeth taking a public train with a single bodyguard and the First Lady of the US taking these lavish trips with a whole retinue.

I began to wonder about the ‘30-40 friends’ reports when we didn’t see any pics of Desiree Rogers fighting to get between Mobama and the cameras.
She couldn’t make the funeral in early July?? Weren’t the haloed one and wife on another vacation in early July?.If the decision to go was made around the middle of July, I find it hard to believe that this place had so many rooms available on such short notice. You can’t get a room in Cape Cod for 5 nites without booking in March. That would mean a lot of people were asked to cancel their vacation plans to open up space for this party. Unless this resort didn’t have any guests scheduled the first week in August.

Since the other daughter is away at camp---does this to mean another $375,000 vacation to focus on being a mom?
