Students at Lincoln Memorial Told to Stop Singing National Anthem
Fox News ^ | 8/9/10 | Todd Starnes

A group of high school students attending a conservative leadership conference in Washington, D.C. said they were ordered by a security guard to stop singing the national anthem during a June 25 visit to the Lincoln Memorial.

“They told them to stop singing,” said Evan Gassman, a spokesman for the Young America’s Foundation. “I was taken aback. You wouldn’t expect a display of national patriotism to be censored."

...

“If their idea of civil disobedience is singing the national anthem, then so be it,” Gassman said. “Let them disobey.”

The crime was "singing it loudly".

Being a staunch conservative I was at first appalled by this scene, but upon reflection and believing in equal application of the law I now see it's merits. The Lincoln Memorial is truly a very quiet place even with large crowds. I would not want protesters to be allowed in there or any one making a lot of noise. Out front on the steps is fine. The headline should have read students told to quit making noise in the Lincoln Memorial. The content of their noise is immaterial.

Schlosser explained that performances, regardless of content, are banned to “maintain a contemplative and reverent area for the Lincoln Memorial, for the other guests and visitors.”

I agree with this 100%. This is a MEMORIAL folks. A place for solemn reflection. When I visited the Memorial a few years back I was appalled at the behavior of some of the visitors - loud like it was an amusement park.

Doesn't matter what they were singing. This is not the place.

U.S. Park Police confirmed that the students were in violation of federal law and their impromptu performance constituted a demonstration in an area that must remain “completely content neutral.”

It is interesting that THIS federal "law" is upheld but the one about securing our borders is not

Singing the National Anthem is now considered a “demonstration”? Infuriating. But have faith that, one way or the other, the Marxist Usurper and his band of angry commies will be driven from Washington and beyond.

The key is to use this fury to get yourself and at least one other person to the polls and vote for conservative candidates this November. And then do the same thing November 2012 for the presidential election. I have no doubt the Marxists will be giving you plenty to feed your anger even after this November’s elections.

Washington is infested with power-hungry illiterate street thugs masquerading as police officers and park rangers stuffed into stretch pants with guns on their hips.

“It is interesting that THIS federal “law” is upheld but the one about securing our borders is not.”

What’s really insane is the GOVERNMENT is suing Americans for wanting EXISTING FEDERAL LAWS that punish ILLEGALS with deportation. We are supposed to SELECTIVELY IGNORE IMMIGRATION LAWS on the federal books. That is what is going on in Arizonia. The immigration law set forth by Arixnia is in perfect harmony with FEDERAL LAW. There is NO CONFLICT with federal law.

Bullcrap. The reasoning given by the Park Police was:

"The area they were standing in and singing is an area that is restricted for this type of activity,” said Sgt. David Schlosser. “The United States Park Police is absolutely content-neutral when it comes to any sort of demonstrations in these areas.”

They consider singing in a group a demonstration.

Now ask yourself, what is a demonstration? It's for advocacy for or against a position or behavior.

Singing patriotic songs is a demonstration? For or against what? Answer that question and you see what this rule is all about.

The rule is a null, a cipher. It is there so that it can be used to allow or disallow at the subjective will of the enforcer.

You can talk all you want about equal application of the law buy please wake me when the law is applied equally. You won't convince me that a group of young Communists or Black Panthers would have been told to stop singing their anthem.

Why does it look like this guy's searching from some reason to justify telling the kids to stop?

Maybe they were just so terribly bad that he had to come up with some reason-- any reason-- to end the suffering? :-)

“...I now see it’s merits.”

Merits my asset. They’re not in a library, or China, for that matter. They’re in America. We have the right to openly express our patriotism in a public place such as this.

I would rather protesters have the right to freely express their privilege to protest peacefully in such places then to silence citizens.

This is BS. Royal BS, and the fact that you would embrace such a violation of our rights reveals your lack of understanding of our liberties in this country.

Right On! These sham elections only quiets the sheeple. This corrupt government is so entrenched that only everyone in it must go. Being that won't happen ergo we are screwed.

I love this quote:

“We need to make certain that all other visitors that don’t want to be a part of that or just choose to be tourists are able to do so in the same light that PROBABLY President Lincoln wanted – which is completely content neutral,” he said.

Probably......heh. This guy thinks he can read Lincoln’s mind.
