Mosque flap swirls around Obama

The White House on Saturday struggled to tamp down the controversy over President Barack Obama’s statements about a mosque near Ground Zero — insisting Obama wasn’t backing off remarks Friday night where he offered support for a project that has infuriated some families whose loved ones died in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Obama’s comments placed him in the middle of the controversy over a Muslim group’s plans for a mosque near the site of the 2001 attack — and in turn, transformed an emotion-laden local dispute in New York into a nationwide debate overnight.

Republicans pounced, amid early signs that the issue would seep into some state and congressional contests. “It is divisive and disrespectful to build a mosque next to the site where 3,000 innocent people were murdered at the hands of Islamic extremism,” said Florida GOP Senate candidate Marco Rubio. His opponent, Charlie Crist, a Republican turned independent, came out in support of Obama’s comments.

And Democrats — at least some who were willing to comment — could barely contain their frustration over Obama’s remarks, saying he had potentially placed every one of their candidates into the middle of the debate by giving GOP candidates a chance to ask them point-blank: Do you agree with Obama on the mosque, or not?

That could be particularly damaging to moderate Democrats in conservative-leaning districts, already 2010’s most vulnerable contenders.

[snip] Obama’s comments Friday night — at an Iftar dinner at the White House marking the start of Ramadan — were widely reported as offering support for the specific mosque project in question near Ground Zero.

Most people do not recognize that what happens in a mosque is sedition. Pure and simple. Islam is not just a “religion”, it is a cult, it is it’s own government, its judicial...is in its sharia, and its military (jihadis) all rolled into one with one intent ...and that is to rule wherever they take root. It is a invasive, systemic infection looking to take over the host once it has quantum.

This is not just a “religion”, but something that cloaks itself in those terms so it should not be given the same treatment contemplated under the first amendment. It’s rules are to consume whatever government is wherever it goes. To supplant and replace.

The sooner America learns this , the better.

Obama? Should be tried for treason in this issue for promoting the establishment of a foreign government on our soils.

I just heard on some cable news show there is a mosque in the Pentagon!

Navy imam Chaplain Abuhena M. Saifulislam lifted his voice to God as he called to prayer more than 100 Department of Defense employees Monday at a celebration of Ramadan at the Pentagon.

God is most great, sang the lieutenant commander and Islamic leader, in Arabic, as iftar — the end of the daily fast began.

Uniformed military personnel, civilians and family members faced Mecca and knelt on adorned prayer rugs chanting their prayers in quiet invocation to Allah.

The “ground zero mosque” story seems to be dying down, but nothing lays bare the absurdity of what we’ve just lived through quite so much as this Washington Times story, quoted above, from 2007.

Yes, Muslims have infiltrated the Pentagon for their nefarious, prayerful purposes — daring to practice their religion inside the building where 184 people died on Sept. 11, 2001. They haven’t even had the sensitivity to move two blocks, let alone a mile, away from that sacred site.

I think the talk shows should beat this against him saying (few months ago) that Israel should NOT build settlements in East Jerusalem.

Are the people who want to build the mosque there supporters of Al Quaeda?

The imam of this proposed monstrosity has been quoted as saying that American foreign policy was responsible for 9/11, and that the question of whether Hamas is a terrorist organization is "complicated." In other words, he's a fellow traveler.

It’s not a good issue for democrats to be talking about right now.

Which is exactly why Gov.Palin brought it up.

I think having an Islamic Mosque in the Pentagon is like having a salt block in your backyard during hunting season.

Have at it. A few basic questions - Are the builders Americans? Have any Islam believers died serving in the US Army? How do we get Islam believers to fight on our side in Iraq and Afghanistan? What do opponents want to accomplish, some kind of Japanese treatment?

"I don’t care how much he tries to “explain” or the media tries to “clarify,” he said what he said..."

Let him. Believe me, it's a good thing. The more he talks about it, the more he and this issue become one in the same. It'll be another completely unpopular idea he owns.

*******************************************************

It’s always been a nation-wide issue. The attack on 911 was an attack on the US, not an attack on NYC or The WTC.

How I long for the days when all we had was a President being dishonest to grand jury, selling secrets to China and bombing aspirin factories.

Someone should ask Obama this question:

What would Mohamed Atta have thought in the final seconds as he saw the Twin Towers, and the surrounding neighborhood, if he knew that in a little more then a decade a tall mosque would rise in that location?

My answer: Allah Akbar

Yep... Zero let his guard down, and said something honest. Now, EVERY Rep. candidate in the country needs to be asking their opponent, "Do you agree with your Party's leader on this?".

It's a BIG loser for the Dems.. cause, normal people see this for what it is: Another Islamic militant wanting to stick it to America... in an old wound.

Exactly, I think we need to keep the focus on this, the leftists are trying to frame this as a purely anti islamic sentiment. However the real problem is WHICH GROUP of death cultists are behind this whole scheme, from those connections and the original name for the den of terror I mean mosque, those are the things that set off alarm bells. Don't let the left frame the debate they are taking us away from the true problem in all this.

Agreed. But, since I don't watch the TV news, I don't know how many Republicans are pushing on this. I am assuming that, true to form, not many.
