AP-GfK Poll: Independent voters sour on Democrats

WASHINGTON – Independents who embraced President Barack Obama's call for change in 2008 are ready for a shift again, and that's worrisome news for Democrats.

Only 32 percent of those citing no allegiance to either major party say they want Democrats to keep control of Congress in this November's elections, according to combined results of recent Associated Press-GfK polls. That's way down from the 52 percent of independents who backed Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain two years ago, and the 49 percent to 41 percent edge by which they preferred Democratic candidates for the House in that election, according to exit polls of voters.

Independents voice especially strong concerns about the economy, with 9 in 10 calling it a top problem and no other issue coming close, the analysis of the AP-GfK polls shows. While Democrats and Republicans rank the economy the No. 1 problem in similar numbers, they are nearly as worried about their No. 2 issues, health care for Democrats and terrorism for Republicans.

Not so. A lot of people with consciences voted for him because they were woefully and willfully ignorant, and are experiencing guilt.

Hyperbole is not our friend.

The number who say they want Dems to retain control is 10 points smaller than the number who supported the GOP in the awful 2008 election. That’s huge.

Throwing the Democrats in (not Huge) gigantic numbers will send an important message to the Republicans as well as the Democrats that survive. If it's big enough they will not just be Democrat light and come up with a real plan and quit trying to destroy the nation. Maybe even do something about Obama (well we can hope anyway).

Most of the independent voters are moderates... You know they don’t usually know where they stand on the issues! They are the ones who have no convictions and can be swayed to vote either way depending on the way the winds blowing!

I f'n despise so-called "independents". They are the least informed voter and yet, they are the ones who decide elections. "Vote for the person not the party", my ass.

We registered as Independents in Arizona this year. Despite all of the border talk, the state GOP went out of it's way to have an open primary to get leftist support for john mccain over JD Hayworth. If it had been a close primary, I believe Hayworth would win it. Since there's no consequence for being an Independent, I can still request a Republican ballot, which we both have, there's no reason to maintain any affiliation with the idiots running the state party willing to sell out to Juan "Open that border" mccain. He may have changed his tune, but he's still dancing the same dance.

Makes me sick...

I will vote for the person I see as the most conservative. If you want to complain in this state, complain to the Arizona GOP for robbing us all of our votes that stand to be canceled out by liberal mccain crossovers.

Independent standing doesn't have the same significance from state to state. I all depends on your local GOP. We have a decent governor who seems to be doing her job and we'll support her. I won't be compelled to support mccain for any reason.

A few interesting observations from this article:

Independents seem to be single-issue voters.

Multi-issue voters seem to affiliate with a party.

Democrats rate health care as almost as important an issue as the economy. Why is healthcare even an issue? Didn't Obamacare solve the healthcare problem?

There is, of course, no resemblance between the idiotic approach to voting that I was describing, and a philosophical conservative using party affiliation as a strategy to further the conservative agenda.

That is comparing apples to grenades.

The “independents” that I loathe are the ones who want to declare the moral high ground by hovering above the philosophical fray. They embrace a more “intellectual” approach...which is how we end up with “geniuses” like Obama, and a “man of the people” like John Edwards.

These "independents" are easily duped, and the rest of us have to suffer for their stupidity.

The recent Gallup poll shows a 7 point GOP advantage on the generic congressional ballot.

But then read the fine print.

That is among REGISTERED voters.

The real GOP advantage as of today? Probably 12 points or so.

Which points to, probably, a 100 seat swing.

I’m not sure what could change this for the D’s, but if the election were next week, they would get slapped worse than 94. Too bad the Senate is more of a reach than it was in 94 or I’d say GOP would take Senate easy.

BUT...all that said...on Nov. 2, when the Dems lose the House, the Obama agenda stops.

Obviously the GOP has a hard time with its own agenda. But that’s ok. Even an incompetent, not truly conservative GOP can stop the Obama agenda.

That CAN happen, and it WILL happen.

It's a little early to take the gains for granted. "Don't prepare the stew while the rabbit is still in the forest."

I hope the Republicans regain at least the House, and would be happy if they regained the Senate too, but let's hope they know how to make use of a victory. Sometimes they are too afraid of their own shadows to figure out what to do.

like I said, if the election were held today.

and you are right. they would lose their way if in a true majority.

but they don’t need that. all we need from them is to stop Obama, and this they will do. it’s not that hard. so i believe they will get that job done.

Agree — those I’ve known are usually namby-pamby types who have no real knowledge or opinions. In fact, the few I know can’t make decisions of any kind and often don’t bother voting at all, coming up with lame excuses after an election is over.

Isn’t that something? I’ve always said that moderates are more dangerous than Liberals. At least I know where a Liberal stands!

We need to do more than just stop obama. We need to roll back (repeal) everything he's done so far. We need to recapture the unspent stimulus money and return it to the treasury (pay it back). We need to investigate EVERY obama appointee for fraud and anti-American activities.

We need to bring McCarthy back and clean house in DC

There are times when the crossover vote helps conservatives. Wallace voters crossed over in great numbers to support Reagan in the 1976 and 1980 primaries.

I just talked with one of our sons, and he said that 80% of his demographic......young Evangelical Christians.......voted for Obama (he didn't), and he's disgusted.

They were fooled by the pseudo-Christian rhetoric, pretense, glitz, image, desire for "reconciliation" (isn't that a laugh now?), and the fact that they had a whole lot of white guilt drummed into them by their culture and education.

Only those who really did their homework understood who they were voting for. But a lot of them are waking up to what they did, and you can bet that they feel guilty about their vote now.

They have consciences, but they were buffaloed and voted stupidly. Unfortunately we're all paying for their idiotic votes, and will for decades to come.
