Poll: Women Treated with Less Chivalry
The Washington TImes ^ | 8/17/10 | Jennifer Harper

Posted on 08/17/2010 9:58:42 AM PDT by lakeprincess

Feminists may insist that life for women has gotten better since the days when raucous female activists marched in the streets for equality and questioned traditional social mores...

Pollsters say otherwise. Things are out of kilter. And pretty dismal, according to a Harris Poll released Monday.

Eight out of 10 Americans, in fact, say, "Women today are treated with less chivalry than in the past."

To be treated like a lady, they need to act like a lady. I appreciate those who do and treat them accordingly.

Maybe because of my age, (old) I never forget to say *Thank you* when some gentleman opens a door for me...I love men, they can do all the stuff I cannot do....

Same with me, I never expect it and never take it for granted, always appreciate it and let them know, especially in this day and age where the feminists for decades have made it so uncomfortable for men of all ages.

Chivalry is no more than courtesy; courtesy is no more than manners. And as my mother taught me, manners are no more than kindness, regardless your gender.

Oh, I understood you completely, and support your position. It just occured to me that continual respect has to be continually earned.

Like obama, a lot of people who respected him when he was running, no longer respect him...because he lied to them.

Once a trust is so blatently violated, and is a long, hard road regaining that respect and trust.

There is an old saying in business that goes:

"It takes a whole lot of 'atta-boys' to overcome just one, 'Oh $hi+".

That statement is folds true to everything from business mistakes and cheating spouses, to lying politicians.

I have never understood the drive by some to destroy what has taken many generations to build up. Sure, some will come out on top because they will be in control, but the majority of those who vote for liberals will not like the eventual outcome.

How can you tell, as you are walking up to a door at the mall, for instance, if the woman is a lady?

LOL! Hadn't heard that one in awhile. It's funny, 'cause it's sooo true.

People posting replies like that seems to be off base and missing the point. Like you said, how can you know in advance if a female is a lady or not. Unless, they are talking about the teenage-20 somethings that don't dress to their fashion standards of quasi-burkas.

I hold the door for men, women, young, old, black, white, latino, weird looking, nice looking, fat, shapely, etc. I don't see what the problem is. It's a kind, nice and right thing to do.

Ditto and I have never had anyone say anything rude. The worst thing I get is lack of a thank you, but so what? I don’t do it for a thank you. Getting one is just very nice.

Actually, I open doors for everyone, man, woman or child. Most people appreciate it. In my delivery days, I’ve also had doors opened for me many times. I always smile and tell them, “thanks, I appreciate it”. Places like schools, kids would race to see who got to hold the door for me.

Thank you, there are a lot of us who appreciate that you do. My teenage daughters notice when someone holds the door for them, opens the car door or pulls out a chair for them. They say “thank you”, too.

Since being "fat" has been perverted to the point where a woman has to look like she just crawled out of Buchenwald to be considered not fat, the term has become meaningless.

I felt like responding to many posts on this thread but this one is the most ridiculous.

Fat is fat. Male, female or gopher, fat is fat.

Very few fat people don't know they are fat if they are fat. Stupid people may not know that they are stupid but the fatties know.

I think it’s more lack of manners than anything else. I have watched young men slouch in a bus seat when an elderly woman gets on (and I have gotten out of my seat to give it to her). I was once carrying my little girl on a crowded bus (carrying her because she would have been trampled) and no one offered a seat, while I was trying to hold her and hang onto a strap. Calling it “chivalry” gives men a free pass to not do it, as women are now, in men’s words, “feminazis, he-men, tramps”, etc. However, basic human kindness to those who are struggling should still be required of all of us.

I teach my children (all girls) to be kind and think of others. Today, I made my daughter get up out of a chair in a waiting room so that an older woman could sit down. this is just good manners.

Apologies for misspelling certainly in my post. Not having served is one of the greatest regrets of my life. My dad was USA/AAC in WW2, eldest brother, USAF Korean War, our middle brother (only 3 years behind the eldest) MAC V SOG, Medic, KIA SVN 1968. I have the utmost respect and admiration for our armed services men and women.

As to military protocol where women are concerned, I’m certain that its communicated effectively and heavily ‘encouraged’.

The only uniform I’ve personally ever worn, besides HS and College marching Band uniforms, is that of the Boy Scouts, within which I’m an Eagle. I had that uniform on just yesterday as a matter of fact.

Thanks for the response...

Ben, I’m a male. I personally believe we should still be doing this when a women enters a room, for the reasons set forth in my original post.

Thanks for the response...

I’m in Chicago but was raised under southern heritage. I have lived in Atlanta, Washington DC (Virginia), Houston, Cincinnati and Denver. My family is from Kentucky.

Don’t kid yourself if you think the stories written from men on FR are because men are bitter, blah blah blah... I’ve opened many of door for women and all I got was the sound of hi-heels clicking away as they walked away without acknowledgment. My girlfriend notices it also. And, it’s not just a ‘few rude women’ LOL... In fact, I am surprised when a woman does say thank you.

... women don’t seem to act very lady-like anymore.
