I live in one of the rudest parts of the country (Palm Beach County). I have been to NYC and believe me, people are ruder here (it’s like they export the very rudest people they can find and send them here). Of course you will find unappreciative people everywhere, but even here, many people still at least smile and acknowledge when you hold a door. And, btw, as a former military brat AND after retirement my dad worked for defense contractors, I have lived in MANY places so it’s not like I don’t have every bit as much exposure to different parts of the country, and the world, as you do.
I think there is something deeper going on here. Is it that some FReeper men have such sensitive feelings that they cannot deal with rude people? That really is what it looks like. It really feels like a lot of pent up anger coming out in this thread. And yet, still, there are wonderful men (and women) posting that even in the face of rudeness they are not going to succumb and become rude themselves. I say bravo to them!

Brytlea, I put on a few pounds after I had a stroke but no I am not fat. I do know that to compare today's standards of being skinny to a survivor of a concentration camp as Seruzawa did is pathetic and disgusting.
Your post had a little bit of a nasty tone (fatties?) so, it’s fair to wonder about you. I have certainly been both fat and thin (am much thinner now, thanks to a medication I had to take). People do treat you differently when you are fat. I never realized until the first time I lost significant weight, suddenly I existed and strangers treated me differently. I don’t really care, my self worth is not vested in what people I don’t know think about me. Rather than call them fatties, I would prefer to help people with weight problems learn how to take it off and keep it off, which is a lifetime job.

As you stated that you have been both fat and thin so you know the difference between the two. I did not call anyone fat, I simply made the point that blaming society's standards for the size of one's own bum is ridiculous.
I knew I had put on weight when my clothes had gotten tighter. This might be a good indicator for those who don't have a clue.

All types of people are vulnerable to their own self destructive behavior. I don’t like to generalize what a gender as a whole is like (in a group) based on what ones own life experiences are or their observations in life. This to me, doesn’t necessarily make one ‘sensitive.’ Though I could see where it could.
There are some things I don’t expect a woman to understand from a mans perspective anymore than I expect a man to understand from a woman’s perspective. Not sure there is anything ‘deeper’ that’s going on. Enough has been said on this thread to take away what you want. I found this thread informative. I’ll take that away... Thanks for your insights.

There was a FReeper who posted on this very thing a while back. He opened the door for and elderly lady who looked at him and said “I don’t need the door held for me just because I’m a woman”, to which he replied, “I’m not holding the door because you’re a woman, I’m holding it because you’re old.”

My response was three facts and a supposition with no psychology at all.
Here is another fact. Fat people are fat. Like it or not it is true. You can make excuses all day long but that doesn’t make them facts.
“I play a little *game* here. S. Florida is filled with the most sour people you can imagine. I smile at them and see how many I can get to smile back. I would say far fewer than 50% but so what? Even if I just brightened one person’s day, that’s enough for me.”
My son and I played that game in the grocery a while back. We’d smile and say hello, some looked at us like we were nuts but a majority returned the greeting.
Just one more thing. I think the breakdown of our culture over the last 30 or 40 years has caused a lot of anxiety in people because they don’t really quite know what the rules are any more.
But you’re right, I think the topic has been covered here.
Sometimes I see someone who looks like they won’t smile back and they do. It really makes my day! Good for you teaching your son to be pleasant.
