Florida authorities have forbidden a church in Gainesville to burn the Quran on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
If the church burns the Qur'ans it would suffer a financial penalty. This is due to the municipal law in Gainesville, which prohibits the burning of books in public.
However, the church has announced that it plans to burn the books on September 11 in any case.

Heck, I'm amazed that the Church's Insurance Underwriter hasn't called in a panic demanding to know what in heck the Church leadership is thinking.
It's like asking, "Well, given that you are against murder, are you, then, against gun ownership."
It's a sad comment on the state of this country that a conservative does not know the difference between what is legal and what is right.
I think that burning books, any of them, is unAmerican. We attack speech we don't like with more speech.
From a completely different angle: attacking Koran (or any other book) is like leftist attacks on guns. You and I know that guns don't kill people; people do. The same is with Koran or Communist Manifesto: neither takes away our freedoms or affects us in any way. What does us damage is people that believe in Koran and/or Communist Manifesto. That is who our enemy is, not things like books or guns.
Today, leftists similar to book-burners of Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia are attacking guns. Tomorrow it will be some other things --- maybe even copies of our Constitution. You and I should take no part of attack on things: not to be in the company of Commies is a sufficient reason. More to the point, focus on things (guns, books) detracts us from focusing on the real enemy (which is why leftists always used that tactic). In addition, when people become used to burning books, it is easy to refocus them on the books they previously loved. (in other words, your favorite books may receive the same treatment some day). That is essentially why bookburning was always considered unAmerican. Apparently, no longer.
Make it a private service just for members and friends.

A concern that I’m surprised hasn’t been raised in this thread is the potential problems this will cause for Christian missionaries who have been called to witness to Muslims.
In my view, said missionaries already have enough roadblocks in their path that render witnessing to Muslims difficult; a church sponsporing a Quaran book-burning will only harden hearts, not win them for Christianity.
The pastor of this church is in the wrong, on this issue.

Other than the obvious comparisons between this nutjob’s antics and the Ground Zero Mosque (both are Constitutionally protected, but still morally wrong and socially destructive), even an Islamic child knows that any translation of the Koran is not the word of God (as these savages understand it), but a translator’s interpretation of the so-called word.
In other words, the Pastor is not actually burning Korans at all. Still, the intent is to disrespact one billion people who are insecure about the fact that the rest of the world does not take them as seriously as the feel they deserve.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Book banning/burning vs. burning one's own property, book or log matters not, are distinctly different actions.
Since it's a First Amendment right then why does everyone here condemn Rev. Phelps and the Westboro Baptist church for their right to protest?
This Koran burning event serves no purpose whatsoever other than to inflame "ALL" Muslims and General Petraeus is right on the money when he warns that such an action will likely cause a backlash against American troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Go figure, Gen. Petraeus has been the darling of all FR but now that he warns against the burning of the Korans he now is being ridiculed............
