I thought hed only been at it for two weeks but apparently its a longstanding thing. See, D stands for Democrats but it also stands for drive, and thats what you want to be doing when youre in a car. Whereas R stands for both Republican and reverse, and no one wants to be doing that. So there you go. Youre now set for the midterms.
Remember: Crushing deficits and near-double-digit unemployment = drive. Wingnut = reverse.
It has since become the Mr. Potato Head of campaign stump speech metaphors.
The president keeps expanding on it. This week, as he repeated it at fundraisers across the country, it continued to balloon into several paragraphs and with bells and whistles tacked on in all directions.
Obama changes features around. He introduces new characters. He adds new props. The other day he decided Republicans were sipping Slurpees as they watched Democrats dig out the car. (Incidentally, Obama is the only president to ever use the word Slurpee in a speech, according to the archives of The American Presidency Project)

Aint that just like a male. Refuses to stop and assess, ask for directions and wont admit a wrong turn was made and have to turn around. Then blames everybody else while driving without a clue.
If you actually drive an actual car into a ditch, it would be a really good idea to go into Reverse.
What is his IQ ?... that makes him act so stupidly !
Not all are fortunate enough to have circular driveways; if there were no R there would be no way to leave home.
And anyhow, there is no D on a real man’s transmission, a manual stick shift.
FOr Obama the “D” is “Destroy” America.
For patriotic Americans, the “R” is “Repair and Restore” America.
There is a difference.
There is a car going down the road with a bad driver. The car pulls over for a hitchhiker from out of the country who has never been in a car before and doesn't know the difference between a brake pedal and an accelerator. The new driver takes the wheel, wrecks the car, kills the passengers and then blames everything on George W. Bush.
How's that for your car metaphor Barack?
When driving over a cliff do you keep the car in D? or put it in R?
Someone was discussing this on the radio the other day. The exact same metaphor has been used by other politicians, some years ago. Obama is such a retread.
Nooo, you put your head between your legs and kiss your...
Doesn’t really matter if you’re already over the cliff. Obama just hasn’t hit bottom yet and thinks he’s soaring like an eagle. It’s going to be a hard landing.
Similar to “Stay outta the Bushes.” What passes for adult political discussion among the Dems.
Reverse brings us back to 5% unemployment
Really! Reverse out of the DITCH!!
I’d like to reverse to a few years back when Stock market was at nearly 1400 (my 401K was in good shape), my house was worth double its current value, unemployment was at 3 percent! Are you better off today than 2 years ago? NO—REVERSE to better times~!
The first time I heard Obama say this, it was cute. I had to give him that much. Now that he’s repeating it over and over, it’s just sophomoric.
I suppose it plays well to less-than-well-informed crowds of indoctrinated liberals, but every conservative hearing this, instantly recognizes that he’s uttering a fundamental untruth.
The Democrats have had control of Congress since early 2007. I’ve seen chart after chart that shows how the country’s budget deficit climbed to unprecedented highs, once they controlled the purse strings.
So, when Obama uses his cute little analogy to accuse the Republicans of “driving the car (of the economy) into the ditch”, he’s lying. If anyone drove the car into the ditch, it was the Democrats.
To explore his analogy a bit, I’d say sticking the car in Reverse, is exactly what we need to do right now to rescue the economy. We need to Reverse the car back to a point where there was at least a modicum of fiscal sanity.
Id take the bus....a lot has happened in and under it
“The other day he decided Republicans were sipping Slurpees as they watched Democrats dig out the car.”
Well, democrats are the ones who drove the car into the ditch. All the while refusing to listen to America. Now they want some help getting the car out of the ditch? A little late for that.
