BOSTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The Salvation Army of Massachusetts has decided to stop getting money from United Way, setting up its own workplace fund drives instead.
Major William Bode sent an e-mail message to United Way Friday, the Boston Globe reported. He discussed the relationship with Michael Durkin, president of United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley over lunch Thursday.
"Every year for the last three years I have communicated with the United Way saying our allocation is going down and I'm very much concerned about that,'' Bode said. "Our advisory board and board of directors had to look at that and say, 'What is happening with the relationship?'"
United Way functions as an umbrella group, collecting donations and passing the money on to other non-profit groups. Some contributions are earmarked for specific organizations.
Durkin said he hopes to revive the relationship between the two groups.
"Our partnership is too strong to end on an e-mail,'' he said.
The Salvation Army's best-known fundraising effort is its Christmastime appeal. As a United Way beneficiary, the group could not engage in its own workplace drives.
The Salvation Army - a Christian organization - and the United Way - a godless liberal organization - really have no commonality of purpose in their missions so it’s fitting that this association of light and darkness should end.

I refuse to support The United Way, not even if the money (or some likely small percentage of it) is earmarked for The Salvation Army. I give directly to the SA. I know first hand of the work they do.
The United Way, in the past has been a strong supporter of groups such as Planned Parenthood.
They are both losers.

Well, this is the time when Salvation Army should restore it’s connection to God and become a supporter of the good in society and disconnect from devil and evil. The United Way is the way of the devil. I would NEVER give to them.
Response; Can you point us to a source evidencing that TSA funds abortions. I was about to give them some money. My wife and I have given them many nice clothes, electronics etc. I will not support organizations funding or providing abortions.

Years ago, when the arrogant UW "administrative costs" got unconscionable, and the Salvation Army pushed into a corner, I permanently dumped UW and the Red Cross among others.
SA now gets all my charity dollars.
Targeting contributions to a specific organization does not mean the organization gets more funding. In actuality, they get less. United Way has a budget for the amount each organization gets. When someone targets (earmarks) a contribution, the budget for that organization is reduced by the targeted amount so the organization gets the amount in the original budget. The kicker is because a portion of the funds are targeted, the organization has to send out thank you notes, which is an expense. The only way an organization will get more than the United Way budget, is for enough donors to target their funds to the organization such that the total exceeds the budgeted amount.
I drove United Way away from our office 20 years ago.
Opinions and assertions on the internet aren't worth the paper they're written on.

We utilize the Salvation Army in a nearby small town in Texas, they’ve never failed (and we give to them also). I’ve taken a few down-and-out folks to their shelter during cold months in the past.
They operate a shelter on a basis of “sure, you’re welcome here but the caveat is that you must help clean up the facilities as you use them and where needed each day”.
Those are Christian principles. United Way can go their OWN way...
Only one has said, “I don’t need any of that” and as I cell phoned, he asked, “Who’re you calling?” I told him the Sheriff’s office to report a vagrant. He changed his mind, the SA said that he cooperated when I checked up on him.
Is there a way to find out how the United Way "awards" the funds?
Or is that "privileged information?

We've given to TSA over 45 years and that's the first I've seen or heard of that. Have you a source or link?
I checked their statement on abortion and they are against it advocating carrying to term. However, I am NOT a competent internet researcher and there may be reports I missed. In this day and age organizations can and will lie to get money. I do doubt TSA would lie they have always seemed straight.
I’m glad to hear it! I have heard good things about some local Salvation Army organizations and how government has been illegally forcing them to get rid of “God”.
I’m don’t believe that’s true. I do remember the charge was made they were somehow linked in some fashion to Planned Parenthood but I never saw any specifics or proof. I questioned the assertion but haven’t been able to find anything else. I find it hard to believe.
The Salvation Army as far as I know has always been above reproach. The United Way on the other hand can go pound sand.
Well THAT part is not the part that bothers me. The parts that do bother me is they extort, embezzle, and steal.
TSA doesn't have pivate jets, do they?
I can remember even as a kid, being leaned on by bosses for "100%" United Fund/UW/Red Cross/whatever recent alias they used..." donations every place I worked. The SA has always gotten my donations. Direct. I think some aspects of the organization are a little goofy, but they were always there, when the RC was hunting headlines.
Plus I was brought up to Chase the RC from the yard. My father was in Normandy, and had a long memory.
