The theory that a giant comet crashed into earth around 13,000 years ago, causing the planet to freeze over and animals to die off is now being called into question as another theory is being put forth to explain the cause of the ice age.

Duh! Oh, that ice age in question, the one the article is about.
Picture me as Homer Simpson.
I'll have to do the math but I think we were due for one about then anyhow but let me check.

This is not what the article is talking about, I have no idea what theory is supposed to be refuted by these uniformitarian impact deniers. :')

The theory that makes most sense is that Earth goes through really long cycles having to do with its movement around the Sun and the Sun's cycle of activity as well. This cause periods of warmer and colder temperatures cycles thousands of years long. What's harder to explain is why the abrupt and short lived period of intense cooling after the deglaciation was well underway. What happened to the Clovis Peoples and the Mega Fauna?

“Clovis man used too much fire.”
Well, I guess that explains Firestone’s “black mat”. ;-)

They had to blame it on humans some way.

Read Firestone’s book. It is an excellent layman’s presentation of the scientific method at work. The black mat is a layer found in many parts of North America deposited at the time of the extinction, and probably the result of wide spread fires.
