The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.
Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.
The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.
General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.
""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...
"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."
"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

There is NO positive end to this, aside from the emotional. Period.
Dove can pretty much burn whatever they want to burn.
I hope they shred it first so it burns easier.
And I hope they use the Acts 19 story to illustrate that it’s not really something new to be burning satanic verses.
All it did was to give even more publicity to the Church, which is exactly what they wanted, and going by their concern for the troops, even mentioning it put them more in danger, than if they just stayed quiet about, and let it pass unnoticed.
If they do it knowing that it might endanger our troops on the battlefield, I will certainly ‘get worked up’ about it.
The current CIC sets the policy of political relationships with Afghanistan's leadership with the tone of securing the country. He also dictates Rules of Engagement for our military.
Petraues is over all commander of coalition forces including NATO. His statement, I would expect, was meant for Karzai's ears and the tribal leaders along the the warlords.
The muslims will stomp and howl but a church in Florida will exercise their right of free speech on Saturday, the 11th.
Like I said, I think burning it is a waste of perfectly good toilet paper.
And to teach their congregants to take events wildly out of context, of course....
By that logic, just posting here at Free Republic could put our troops at risk, if anyone over there reads a lot of these threads.

Thanks for the smile. I actually don’t care what they do with the korans. They can do whatever they want with them, but to pretend that this is somehow unChristian is to ignore the Christian tradition of speaking the truth about evil.

You brought it up because you were accusing people of being against this burning on Christian principles as having the "Christianity" of the UN, and not the Bible. Didn't work.

We’ve gone over it. It isn’t out of context.
In fact, there was very real disapproval of those texts that was evident in that story. And there was very real approval of the burning of them evident in that story.
But, it’ll have to await the day when this dies down for some to see it.
Sure, why not. They are private citizens expressing their opinions on a public forum, just like here at Free Republic, where anyone can read the posts.
