Gen. Petraeus: Dove World Outreach Center's 'Burn a Koran Day' endangers US troops
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 09/07/2010 | Jonathan Adams

Posted on 09/07/2010 6:19:50 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.

Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.

The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.

General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.

""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

THEY ARE NOT GOING TO KILL ANYONE BECAUSE OF IT.

Funny how this distinction fails to occur to so many people.

It won’t make them hate us any more. Hell, a couple of years ago they were literally driven to suicidal violence over CARTOONS. It’ll always be something. Trying to appease muslim sensibilities through overblown sensitivity is a fool’s errand. I don’t particularly like the Koran burning thing but the right response is to shrug indifferently, cite our principle of free speech, and move on, rather than get all culturally self-critical and show weakness to the Muslims.

Well, general, we know you have to follow the orders of your commander. And we KNOW what the Marxist Muslim in the Oval Office thinks.

But I think a national Burn a Koran Day would be a good idea.

These scum feel THEIR religion, THEIR prophet, etc are untouchable but they have no problem insulting or killing other people who are not Muslims.

Screw them all - burn the Korans.

The muslims in Afghanistan are on TV right this minute burning the US flag and effigies of Petraeus (I think it is.)

How will NOT burning the koran change anything?

Trying to win the hearts and minds of muslims is endangering our troops. We need to kill more bad guys until they decide it isn't worth fighting us. Although, they will eventually act up again, and then we need to kill more.

They will never like us.

Unfortunately, that won’t happen until the Day of Revelation.

Due to Abraham’s impatience, Islam is always going to be a problem.

What endangers our troops is having them in Afghanistan at all when Peetreus himself has said that the goal there is to make an accomodation with the taliban and allow them back in power. This is crazy. I say bring the troops home now!

Had that idiotic church not started this "Burn the Koran" thing, we would not have this outrage occuring in Afghanistan.

That event was un-necessary and provocative. Christians should SHUN the Dove Center and OPENLY voice their disapporval to what they are doing.

What does the General have to say about IRAN paying Taliban to kill Amerocans? Are Afgan citizens that are taking part in the “Death to America” protest being paid by IRAN?

Here is an idea for the General and the administration, turn over the running of the fight to the people that know how to win, ie the military, get rid of all Congressional oversight, kick the UN out of the US. Collateral damage is to be expected, if Muslim citizens will not divulge where the insurgents are hiding amongst them, too bad for them.

First of all, the definition of a "moderate Muslim" is a Muslim who is out of ammunition ... that being said ...

I cannot believe Petraeus (although he is an Øbama appointee), is doing this. This is a WAR ... the Taliban are trying to KILL our people. Do these morons believe that they are going to try to KILL US MORE DEAD because a bunch of nuts in Florida burn a book? This isn't about books or PC or feeling good or "maybe" ... it's about life and death. That is, unless maybe they are not fighting a war ... maybe they consider this an "occupation" now?

If it is a war, you don't worry about burning books, you worry about burning down the damned poppy fields that are supporting this whole mess. We sprayed the VC with Agent Orange)... defoliated the place. I'm sure by now we have an "environmentally friendly" agent Orange (Green Orange?)... but is there any talk of burning and defoliating the poppy fields? No. Why not? Well, these poor farmers would be upset with us. And while the people "running" this war worry about books being burned in Florida, they are putting our soldiers into body bags and send them home with a flag! But that is not discussed and there is no outrage.

Time to carpet bomb the place, clean out the gene pool, bring our guys home and put them on the southern border ... WITH ammunition.

What does this idiot think will happen to the troops when 1.2 billion muslims realize they can yank the average American's chain on command by threatening them?

Might as well just bring em home NOW.

The Kenyan muhammadan commie put him up to this and it stinks.

Thanks, this should be shared and distributed far and wide.

I either forgot about this or don't remember it, but either way, it was an abomination and the poster child of Political Correctness/Nation Building/Multiculturalism, run amok.

What is worse is that according to the timeline (supposedly May 2008) this would have made it under W's watch, which should not surprise anyone, as this poor naive, uninformed and misled (no doubt by Islamo-Fascist, Jihad/Muslim Brotherhood-supporting TRAITOR--Grover Norquist--who should have been banned and shunned by all Conservatives a long time ago) "Compassionate Conservative" RINO, Bush, started out being a "Crusader-like Commander,"--ready, willing and able to kick some Radical-Islamic ass--and ended up like so many other "Dhimmis" praising/defending/appeasing, the faux, cult-cum-religion of "Pieces!" and its practitioners!

GOD forbid (pun intended) we should have allowed any "Proseletizing" and anyone trying to convert the heathen/barbarian/rock-worshipping-pagans.

The BIGGEST mistake we made was allowing Iraq and Afghanistan to form governments with the "Controlling Authority," being Islam/Sharia.

That in itself, guarantees we will never succeed in "Nation Building" or convince either country to live peacefully among other nations.

If we ___ - you fill in the blank - here at home "the terrorists will have won".

Remember that one?

Normally I wouldn't have considered any such silly protest but the general's comments have the effect of throwing down the gauntlet. Are we free or not?

Petraeus needs to familiarize himself with the concept of total war.

***************

I agree with you, but we have not fought to win decisively at a strategic level since WWII. That was 65 years ago.

The closest exception was Reagan’s bankrupting the Soviet Union, which was inspired genius.

"I wonder when Petreaus is going to figure out that there is no such thing as a “moderate” Muslim."

I think he already knows that. He is just trying to do what ever it takes to win over there. He knows that despite prior success in Iraq, his military career hinges on the success in Afghanistan.

I don't think it is too much to ask the Rev. Jones to back off.
