Bielat for GOP in the 4th ~ Boston Herald endorses Barney Frank's opponent
The Boston Herald ^ | September 10, 2010

It has always been true in politics - yes, even in this year of heightened engagement and expectations - that you can’t beat someone with no one.

And for many of the 30 years Barney Frank has represented the 4th Congressional District the Republican Party has been hard pressed to find someone, anyone, to challenge the increasingly powerful incumbent.

Finally a Republican has come along who is smart, politically savvy, and willing to do the kind of back-breaking work it takes to make this a real race. Sean Bielat is that candidate in the 4th Congressional District Republican primary.

The 35-year-old ex-Marine (he currently holds the rank of major in the Marine Reserves), an independent consultant, has been running an energetic campaign in the district that runs from Brookline and Newton to New Bedford.

For some false reason, I was under the impression that MA’s Barney the Essential was retiring this year.

Whoa.

The Herald is a little more conservative than the Globe, isn't it?

Wait a minute. Does the Globe even exist any more? Haven't heard a peep from it in some time.

Hopefully there will be a large turnout of women voters.

Yes, he is but he just doesn’t know it yet. :)

Yes they are, but I’d be willing to bet they haven’t endorsed another opponent of Frank’s before.
I could be wrong since I don’t know for sure, but he’s never had a viable challenger before now so I tend to believe this could be the first time they’ve endorsed an opponent of his.

The Globe is a far left publication. The Herald is center-right. Has a fair amount of lib columnists but the editorial board is mostly right of center.

“The 35-year-old ex-Marine”

*Ex* Marine?

Hoo boy, if my great uncle Bob (WW2 Marine, veteran of the Battle of Saipan) was still alive and saw that...

You are right but I’m reading it as a forced retirement due to a lack of interest.

How could you not support an opponent of Barney Frank?

How does he keep getting elected over and over ?

How did this lisping POS gets so much power, and then abuses it?

What has become of America when a person like Barney Frank can wreck and ruin our economy and our great nation?

Think of all the ammo his challenger has - I remember one of his town hall meetings where he spoke quite sarcastically to those attending. I'm sure that same tone will be used in any debate.

I have no idea how he keeps getting elected but we have a real shot at changing that this year.

In other news, pharmacies in the DC area are expecting a decline in sales of K-Y Jelly beginning November 2010.

Sean Bielat certainly has the right stuff. Very impressive background and viewpoints. It’ll be such a delight to see him boot Barney out of Congress.

The failure to unseat people like this has more to do with the State Republican Party’s historically poor organization, tendency to shoot itself in the foot, and a resultant climate of “you’re doomed before you start” than it does with the perceived overwhelming liberalism of the state. I’m saying that with some more victories like Scott Brown’s (yes, he’s much too liberal on many issues for me, but he beats the daylights out of the alternatives), and some competent organization and effective articulation of principles, there is no reason you couldn’t see a lot more conservatives elected from this state. The total power of the Democrats has also resulted in serious entrenchment, as you would see if you looked at the districting maps, which they have been able to draw to their overwhelming advantage for decades and decades.

I agree.
TOO MANY people in my district think Barney isn’t beatable.
He is.
