At least 5,000 women a year are killed or driven to suicide by fathers or brothers who think that, according to tribal tradition, the inferior female has shamed the family. It is most worrying that the custom has migrated to Europe and the Americas.
In a series of articles in the UK-based Independent, concerning the practice of so-called honor killings and written by well-known Middle-East journalist Robert Fisk, the repeated appearance of the mobile phone is very striking, showing how medieval and modern are now intermingled. Daughters are told to commit suicide by mobile, sisters are phoned and asked to meet brothers only to be shot when they arrive others again are killed merely their mobile has stored an unfamiliar number that could be from a secret admirer.
Women who are killed this way die for a variety of reasons if the latter term can be applied at all: not wanting to enter into a marriage arranged by her family without her consent, being disobedient, talking to or meeting a man outside her own family, being suspected of adultery, having an actual love affair, having been raped, having become pregnant by way of incestuous rape by her own father, wanting to adapt to the culture in the new country the family migrated to, not following traditional dress-code, wanting a divorce from an abusive husband, having had a gynaecological exam.
It is difficult to imagine, but all of the dishonorable actions, situations or experiences listed above have been documented as reasons why fathers and brothers, sometimes with the consent of the mother, have felt that the only way out of the situation was murder: slashing a throat, 33 stabs with a knife, a few gunshots, wringing a neck, burying a girl alive or drowning her. Last not least, the accused may simply be ordered to commit suicide and thats what the frightened women sometimes actually do.
Dua Khalil Aswad. Aged 17, she was stoned to death in Nineveh, Iraq, by a mob of 2,000 men for falling in love with a man outside her tribe.
Heshu Yones The 16-year-old was stabbed to death by her Muslim father Abdullah, in west London in 2002, because he disapproved of her Christian boyfriend.
Tasleem Solangi The Pakistani village girl, 17, was falsely accused of immorality and had dogs set on her as a punishment before she was shot dead by in-laws.
Shawbo Ali Rauf Aged 19, she was taken by her family to a picnic in Dokan, Iraq, and shot seven times after they had found an unfamiliar number on her phone.
If the estimate by the United Nations of 5,000 such killings per year is correct, it comes down to 13 dead women and girls every single day, yet if the estimate by aid-workers and womens shelters are true, who think in terms of 20,000 it would mean that a woman is killed by this custom every 27 minutes on each day of the year. While some countries, like Jordan for example, have introduced laws intended to change the situation, it is on record that in many instances police and the judges allow the killers to go free.
In Pakistan, the country that has the most honor killings on the planet, the killer is not punished as long as his father or the rest of the family forgives the killer his deed. It seems to be similar among the Kurdish population in Iraq. where of 350 known honor killings, committed within a mere 7 months in 2007, only five of the killers were convicted, which is a mere 6 percent.
Wonder why we haven’t heard the NAGS condemning this practice?
There’s such a richness gained from accepting diverse cultures......../projectile
The best way to bring honor to a muslim family is to throw acid in their daughter's face. That way, she will always wear a burka and can still help out around the house.
When these murders occured in the USA, there was no outrage. There was more outrage over the threat to burn indoctrination books.
"Honor" has NOTHING to do with it.
Call it what it is:
First degree murder of family members by Islamic Fundmentalists.
And prosecute the murders as such - this should NEVER be allowed on American soil!
The two beautiful daughters murdered by that monster.
Aasiya Z. Hassan (when head was still attached). Buffalo, N.Y.
Praise the all encompassing moon god of the middle-kingdom, our disobedient daughters are being taken care of! /s
In all seriousness though, there is an underlying reasoning behind this that does make some sense (in a 7th century kind of way). Mohammad was a fairly keen observer of human behavior (had to be to come up with something that a bunch of yahoos in the desert would lay down their life for) and was especially observant of what role women played in the down fall of the Roman empire. He came to the conclusion that giving women license to pursue their sexual desires was an inherently dangerous thing that had to be strictly controlled (and hey Islam is ALL about control/submission). So he set up a system that strictly controls the sexual behavior of women.
The interesting thing is that the west was not all that different than the middle-east or far east when it came to this kind of thing. Adultery, premarital sex, disobeying parents were all dealt with fairly harshly until around the late 19th century in the west and until the early 20th century in the far east. Although granted in the west it was rarely a death sentence, it might as well have been since the offending woman was basically marked for life and had no real hope for the future.
Now in the enlightened west and far east women are free to become as slutty as they want to be and not only is it tolerated but encouraged by government freebies and “you go grrl” statements. Look at what that has done to western civilization and the family.
We stand where Rome stood 2 thousand years ago, it didn’t turn out to well for them and it won’t for us either. If things take their normal course when a corrupt civilization falls there is always a stronger one waiting to take its place. Just looking at birth rates I’d say you might want to buy your prayer rug early while they are still cheap ;)
MUSLIM HONOR KILLINGS IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICAWith Islam gaining an ever greater foothold in America, we will see more and more advocates for Sharia Law. That which most Americans find distasteful and barbaric-already manifests in the United States with seven million Muslims. We will see violent treatment of more and more women and suffer more and more court cases of Muslim men as they kill their wives and daughters for disobeying them. You can take a person out of a culture, but you cannot take the culture out of the person.
Fox News, January 1, 2008 reported a Muslim honor killing in Garrett, Texas when a 12 year old girl and her sister called 911, screaming, "My dad shot me; I am dying." She and her sister died before an ambulance arrived. Reason: father didn't like them wearing western jeans and blouses.
"Honor Killing in Texas" by Robert Spencer, 01/08/2008. "Amina Said, 18, and her sister Sarah, 17, smile happily in one widely circulating photo, and Amina is wearing what looks like a sweatshirt bearing the name "AMERICAN." But their fate may have been the herald of a new, disquieting feature of the American landscape: honor killing. Amina and Sarah were shot dead in Irving, Texas, on New Year's Day. Police are searching for their father, Yaser Abdel Said, on a warrant for capital murder."
In Clayton County, Georgia, January 26, 2009, a Pakistani immigrant father, Chaudry Rashid strangled his daughter for not accepting his choice of a husband. She wanted a divorce. She was 14 when she died. "Man Accused Of Killing Daughter For Family Honor" by Jamie Tarabay of NPR. "Honor killings are old rites of murder within families, committed because of some perceived dishonor or shame. The United Nations estimates around 5,000 deaths occur each year - mostly of women, mostly in South Asia and the Middle East."
In New York, February 16, 2009, FOX News, Joshua Rhett Miller reported, "The estranged wife of a Muslim television executive feared for her life after filing for divorce last month from her abusive husband," her attorney said - and was found beheaded Thursday in his upstate New York television studio. Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37, was found dead on Thursday at the offices of Bridges TV in Orchard Park, N.Y., near Buffalo. Her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, has reportedly been charged with second-degree murder. "She was very much aware of the potential ramification of her filing for divorce might have," said attorney Elizabeth DiPirro, whose law firm represented Aasiya Hassan in the divorce proceeding. "But she wanted to proceed despite the potential for it to erupt."

Great work! Well researched and documented. Once again the religion of “Peace” scores! I hope Michelle O. knows not to get out of hand. Of course she does have the Secret Service protection... for now.
I met a Syrian Christian man in Paris 20 years ago. He told me if his sister dishonored the family name he would kill her. I think there is a lot to be said for arranged marriage. The United States should not be compared to the Roman Empire. It should be compared to the Roman Republic.
They will try and use his “religion” as a defense.
This is where I agree with eye for an eye legal logic.
Put him in a cab and shoot him point blank multiple times.
Simple solution: don’t allow Muslims to immigrate here.
Simple solution: dont allow Muslims to immigrate here
I agree, if you allow wolves in your pasture, don’t besurprised that you have fewer sheep at the end of the day.....and don’t turn your back on the wolves, you taste good too and they will not hesitate to satisfy their appetites with you.
#ing savages.
Notice that this goes on in a number of countries that have one thing in common - Islam. Iraq and Pakistan are two different countries and the Kurds are a different ethnic group from either Pakistan or Iraq and yet you find this in all three countries. Islam is what these three ethnic groups have in common.
