The shooting happened just before midnight Tuesday at a home on Antha near Bertwood in North Houston.
Homicide detectives were investigating the case Wednesday. They confiscated several guns in the man's home. The elderly man said he let the victim inside his home before this time he feared for his life.
If you sit down with Jack Hands, you'll hear plenty of stories that span over his 91 years. This story, however, is one he never thought he'd tell police. Hands shot and killed a man inside his home Tuesday night.
"That's where he fell and I stood right here," Hands said.
He placed a white blanket over the 30-year-old man until homicide investigators arrived.
"He's a local crackhead. I'll call it like it is," Hands' family friend Cynthia Jackson said.
Hands, who has a neighborhood reputation for being generous, helped the man many times by giving him food and money.
"He'll take the shirt off his back and give it to you even if you didn't need it," Jackson said.
Tuesday night was no different. Hands opened his door to the man yet again. This time, he was asking for $80.
"He got money from me and then came back [for more]," Hands explained.
When Hands hid not hand over the cash, he said the man picked up a loaded gun in the home and threatened to use it.
"You're going to die tonight. You're going to die tonight," Hands recalled the man saying.

Nice shooting, Tex.
I hope the local Texas gun rights organizations go after this policy of automatic police confiscation of firearms after any kind of an incident when charges are not filed. They do that here in VA as well and there’s no excuse for it.
Yes, why did they take the old guy’s guns? Then they put that in the news report??? Now every thug in the area knows this poor man is unarmed.
This guy made me think of all the times that freepers had to respond “Spend more time at the shooting range” etc.
One shot, to the head, job done, at 91. God Bless the generous and prudent Jack Hands.
Never pick a fight with an old man. If he’s too old to fight, he’ll probably just kill you.
Goes to show you. No matter how many guns you have, always have a couple hidden/buried for when they take your guns away for your own good.
I find the closer I see the face of death, the more things I find much worse. That is a dangerous thing for people to screw with.
IMHO, this guys should not have his guns displayed in plain view like that. I sure would have all but one stashed out of view somewhere---
Hmmm, playing nice with feral freaks doesn’t seem to be working out too well.
In the mid ‘80’s, in Stephenville,Texas, my uncle, who was a disabled veteran, kept complaining to the local police about drug deals going down across the street, day and night. They told him to get license plate numbers. He compiled a lengthy list and turned it over. Cops stalled. Over time, the thugs bashed the windows out of my uncle’s antique cars & vandalized his home. One weekend while he was away, they stole all his guns. The next time they came, they knew he was unarmed and they killed him, but not before gouging his eyes out & torturing him until he begged to be killed. Stephenville, Texas turned it’s back on Shroy D Reed.
They've disarmed the poor old guy and bothered to publish that fact. I hope that he has some good neighbors who are armed and can come to his defense.
Oh my, that is so horrible. I’m so sorry for your family. There is no excuse for that, and I wonder how the police can live with themselves after that.
Bang, you're dead.
I bet the perp was really surprised to wake up dead.He obviously thought the old man wouldn't kill him, after hands helped him so many times. Thats what happens when you help crack heads. You can never get them enough cash. There is no such thing as a helping relationship with a drug addict. Its a good thing Hands got in the range time.Pulling and snap shooting is not easy at that age.
What a nightmare. Were the perps ever caught?
“We commit this dumbass to the ground,
In the midst of life, because he is in death.
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, and dust to dust, son.
With sure and certain holes from his transgression,
And trespassing with ill intent on another man’s estate,
He is headed to a place with infernal combustion.”
respectfully half correct...
on the enuff cash part, no there is never enuff, buy a sandwich ifn theyre hungry sure, but no cash...
I know plenty of drug addicts, in various stages of recovery, and others, not so much...the important thing is that we try to help em, cause i cant read the heart, if they are unwilling, we need to be wary of the possibilities...sounds like the ole guy knew the risks, and acted accordingly...
Speculation? Upon reading your first posting, that was my quick conclusion.
And the cops wonder why no one wants to get involved.
