Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban

WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked legislation that would have repealed the law banning gays from serving openly in the military. The partisan vote was a defeat for Senate Democrats and gay rights advocates, who saw the bill as their last chance before November's elections to overturn the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

With the 56-43 vote, Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. It also would have authorized $726 billion in defense spending including a pay raise for troops.

True. With a minority of 41 Republican Senators (one of which did not vote today) the only way that cloture failed was that 3 DEMOCRATS!! voted to continue debate. You will notice I said "continue debate" as a cloture vote is a vote to end debate and bring the bill to the floor for a "Yes or No" vote.

This action does not "kill" the bill it simply continues debate.

Having said that, does anyone really think that the Dems that voted against cloture "really" want to continue debate? Or is it that they don't want to have to go back to their seething constituents and "explain themselves"?

You be the Judge.

This is a prime example of how the libs "booby trap" legislation; I haven't heard a word about pay raises for the military. The libs want the gay bill to pass, but they know it will be blocked - elections coming, thrown in a military pay clause and let some of the dems ensure the bill will be blocked, and then blame it on the GOP.

But if they start their rhetoric, then the GOP'ers should take the stance of NJ Governor Christie and say, "Damn right we did, we can't afford it now after all of the uncontrolled spending of obama and the democrats.".

And, democrats, if you're so concerned about the troops, why are you saddling them with these asinine "rules of engagement" that is essentially makeing them targets for the enemy?

The conservatives need to adopt Newton's Laws of Gravity when the dems are involved, "Every action has an equal, and opposite, REACTION."

The dems are really covered...because DADT was Clinton policy AND EVERYONE WAS HAPPY. Almost sounds like a few Dems regret supporting Obie.

Anyone really care what Gaga says, thinks, does.

I have more respect for Lindsay right now....The system did her wrong. She needs tough love.

“The idea that Republicans are stopping the repeal of DADT against the gay-loving Democrats will increase support for Republicans”

Let’s not forget the “Nightmare Law” that was to have given in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. I can’t imagine that was rip-roaring popular, either.

THANK YOU GOD! Our military dodged a bullet this time, but the homosexuals will not stop until DODT is repealed.

Reid loads the bill with DADT, forcing military hospitals to perform abortions, and amnesty for illegals, then votes against it himself. But that’s not all.

He then comes out and accuses Republicans of blocking funding for military.

Who in Nevada could vote for this POS?

But I know as a Vet that those guys would sacrifice a pay raise to keep don’t ask don’t tell in place.

Congress should let the service men and women vote for or against. And only then, bring up the issue again.

What I find interesting is not really a mention that the bill had the “Dream Act” attached to it I wonder why maybe because people would be pissed. I think they threw in the DDT measure for cover and since Lady Ga Ga is promothing that they could hide the other ghastly things they stuffed in a bill that was for our military. Harry Reid is a jerk

I have a gay relative, and we’ve talked about this DADT thing. He’s about 40 now, and past military age. He told me that he would have loved to have served in the armed forces but didn’t want to give up his identity; he was definitely anti-DADT. I think he would’ve made a good soldier, unlike his super macho dad, who doesn’t handle discipline all that well. When I was on active duty (60-64), it wasn’t an issue.
