WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked legislation that would have repealed the law banning gays from serving openly in the military. The partisan vote was a defeat for Senate Democrats and gay rights advocates, who saw the bill as their last chance before November's elections to overturn the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

With the 56-43 vote, Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. It also would have authorized $726 billion in defense spending including a pay raise for troops.

Don’t forget that the “Dream Act”, so-called, was a part of Harry Reid’s mess that was voted on. That would have permitted the broke federal government to pay the college costs of illegal aliens. A typical example of how Democrats care about potential votes more than they do about the American public.

From another thread by kcvl :

Senate also blocks action on DREAM Act for illegal immigrants

In failing to advance the Pentagon spending bill and the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the Senate also blocked action on the DREAM Act, which offers a path to legal status for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children.

Both measures were attached to the $726 billion military spending bill. A vote to end a Republican-led filibuster failed, 56-43.

Thank God!!!!

These socialist leftists need to get kicked out -the sooner the better!

No homosexual sex promotion in the military!

No blanket amnesty and educational subsidies for illegal alien minors!

No abortions in military facilities!

The public better keep their eyes open with this administration as they will try to find some way to sneak this stuff through -laws and ethics mean nothing to these leftists...

What’s so bad about “Don’t ask, don’t tell”?

It's rather dishonest don't you think?

Yes your post is the truth. Seems like many even on here had no clue what was attached to this bill. Thank God for Republicans and that Republicans blocked it.

This bill wasn't about pay raises it was about Amnesty for illegals so democrats could get more voters. So almost all democrats wanted this bill to pass.

It would have given illegals citizenship and a free education paid by us the American people.

the big thing to keep in mind is that the Demoncrats will do ANYTHING to suppress or worse, deny the Fighting Men and Women of America their right to vote. This will be dealt with, I trust, in the first weeks of the new Tea Party Congress. Obozomotron better sign it.

Yes, I’m thanking my lucky stars for Republicans like Senator Arlen Specter, who change parties at the drop of a hat.

I’m thanking my lucky stars for guys like Senator Jefferds who changed parties and gave the Democrats the majority.

I’m thanking my lucky stars for Republican Senators who support this kind of stuff: http://www.hotr.us/maccain/mccainagain.html

I’m thanking my lucky stars for Republican candidates who support the LOST Treaty, Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and McCain’s agenda.

I’m also thanking my lucky stars for Republican leaders who tell me to get in line and back John McCain because we really need to reach 51 for a Senate majority, and at the same time tell me that Christine O’Donnel isn’t fit to hold public office, so don’t vote for her even if we do need to reach 51 to get a majority in the Senate.

I’ve been around here for a number of years. Anyone that really cares to know can look at my comments and figure out that I not only don’t support democrats, but I won’t even support Republicans(D)s.

I do want to thank you for dropping in to provide an example of why it’s important to have old timers around here in addition to folks who are still wet behind the ears.

It looks like Senator Landreau has a political deathwish. Does she think that homosexualizing the military is a goal shared by the people of her state.

"What's so bad about "Don't ask, don't tell"?

Nothing. I thought it was a good compromise when it first came in and still do.

I'm very glad that Republicans blocked this Amnesty for illegals and I'm happy because Republican will trounce democrats/socialists on 11/02/10.

Your Democrats created almost all government agencies. Republican Congress did not.

I Know Republicans stopped Amnesty today as Republicans did for the 12 years they controlled Congress.

Also Republicans Stopped Government healthcare from Clinton , stopped global warming legislation, stopped tax increases from Clinton.

Republicans cut taxes in 2001 , 2003. 2 conservative justices on the Supreme Court, welfare Reform. Most of Contract with America etc.

Whatever you think you are doing , you are just wasting your time. Democrats are going to be totally annihilated on 11/02/10 and that makes me very happy. what you and your group says doesn't matter at all.

I'm sure you think you and your little group are changing minds to help the democrats/socialists. But you are not.

Democrats are going to be totally annihilated on 11/02/10 and that makes me very happy.

DADT was a Clinton initiative that allowed LGBs to serve their country, so long as they keep their sexual orientation to themselves. To protect them, no one is allowed to ask them about it either in order to harass or get them expelled.

What is definitely common-sense legislation is being used by the Left as a gateway to something else - it’s always been the goal of the Left to ruin the military, and one of the ways to do it is to destroy morale, create distractions, and cause disruptions. All of this will be attempted through repeal of DADT.

Not a shocker but Webb and Warner in Virginia both voted YES on closure.

Here’s a link to your senators’ votes:
