Illinois Professor Says Chanting ‘USA’ is Bellicose Propaganda
Publius Forum ^ | 9/24/10 | Warner Todd Huston

Posted on 09/24/2010 11:20:26 AM PDT by republicanbred

Oh, you ignorant Americans with your venal patriotic chants of “USA, USA” at sporting events. Your bellicosity isn’t patriotism, it’s propaganda and lowly militarism… so says David Green, University Administrator and member of the University of Illinois Institute of Government & Public Affairs.

Green’s poisoned pen letter to American patriots was published by the Daily Illini, an “independent newspaper” at the U of I, and features every manner of attack on America.

Green’s vituperation covers the gamut of anti-Americanism: America is “imperialist,” she is unconcerned over the deaths of Muslims, America is”nativist,” and patriots are prone to “obnoxious, fake-macho, chicken-hawk” chants. In other words all that is wrong with the world is evinced in the United States of America.

The professor’s screed was short, but filled with hate for America:

The vast majority of 9/11 observances in this country cannot be seen as politically neutral events. Implicit in their nature are the notions that lives lost at the World Trade Center are more valuable than lives lost in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere; that the motives of the 9/11 attackers had nothing to do with genuine grievances in the Islamic world regarding American imperialism; and that the U.S. has been justified in the subsequent killing of hundreds of thousands in so-called retaliation.

The observance at Saturday’s football game was no different. A moment of silence was followed by a military airplane flyover; in between, Block-I students chanted “USA, USA.” This was neither patriotism nor remembrance in any justifiable sense, but politicization, militarism, propaganda and bellicosity. The University is a public institution that encompasses the political views of all, not just the most (falsely) “patriotic.” Athletic planners should cease such exploitation for political purposes. They might at least consider how most Muslim students, American or otherwise, would respond to this nativist display; or better, Muslims and others that live their lives under the threat of our planes, drones and soldiers.

The overwhelmingly white, privileged, Block-I students should be ashamed of their obnoxious, fake-macho, chicken-hawk chant, while poverty-drafted members of their cohort fight and die in illegal and immoral wars for the control of oil. University administrators need to eliminate from all events such “patriotic” observances, which in this country cannot be separated from implicit justifications for state-sponsored killing.

Looking at the comments section finds very little support for this anti-American and not everyone at the Daily Illini are in love with this hater as an October 11 entry from 2005 shows.

But this isn’t the first time that Green went down the path of hate for the west. Green has penned many antiAmerican, anti-Jewish screeds over the last decade. In 2005, for instance, Green wrote a review of one of Holocaust denier Norman Finkelstein’s books that proved that Green is a supporter of Palestine Liberation Organization and is critical of the so-called Holocaust industry.

Like a well-worn hat, Green tries on the old claim that the American’s actions at abu Ghraib and “Israeli torture” are materially the same as the Nazi-generated Holocaust. In his review Green intimates that Israel perpetrates “criminal behavior” that is little different than Hitler’s.

In March Green wrote a screed on the supposed iron-fisted Israel Lobby where he also says that the U.S. is motivated solely by imperialism in its war on terror.

Green is also a member of the Champaign/Urbana chapter of Anti-War, Anti-Racism Effort and is known as a member of the Jewish Voice for Peace which absorbed Not In My Name, the latter formerly based in Chicago.

It is infuriating that this man makes his living feeding off the taxpayers of the state of Illinois. According to the CollegiateTimes.com website, Green’s 2009 salary was $36,388 of Illinois tax dollars. This is the sort of anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-western “academic” that infests the American university system from north to south and east to west. These people are living off the taxpayers and spreading their hate every single day.

If you would like to contact Green and let him know how you feel, his office phone number is (217) 333-3231 and is email is dlgreen@illinois.edu. ____________ “The only end of writing is to enable the reader better to enjoy life, or better to endure it.” –Samuel Johnson

Why waste time contacting Green, he will only enjoy it! I contacted the program director at his contact link...http://igpa.uillinois.edu/email/42/field_person_email This is what I said to him, "I am literally sickened at the comments made by University Administrator David Green related to students chanting "USA,USA" at a sporting event at your university. How you can justify having this person on the staff of a university supported in part by AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS is a bafflement to me. It literally makes me sick!! Things like this are why my generation of public university educated professionals will NEVER send OUR children to public university. You have become a bastion of sewage that is destroying the fiber of this country. The thought that Patriots thoughout our country's history have spilled blood and our taxes have supported the opportunity to give people like David Green the right to spew such language is just one more example of why true conservatives are rising up and taking this country back. It is a beautiful new day in America!"

Professor Green is still bitter about being a clumsy loser at sports when he was a kid. He is also bitter about getting swirlies every day from the 8th grade football team.

Implicit in their nature are the notions that lives lost at the World Trade Center are more valuable than lives lost in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere;

That's ridiculous.

No one claims that those lives are more valuable.

But they ARE more valued TO US AMERICANS.

It doesn't matter one whit what their motives are, legitimate grievances or no.

it was an act of terror, committed by cowards, and should be reviled as such.

They might at least consider how most Muslim students, American or otherwise, would respond to this nativist display;

Perhaps they DID consider it, and came to the conclusion that THEY JUST DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS.

Why didn't you phrase it "most American students, Muslim or otherwise" ?

Why are they Muslims first?

What's wrong with "nativism"?

They're shouting "USA - USA"!

Do Iranians shout "Iran! - Iran!"? No - that would be "nativism" - they shout "Death to USA"!

Some professors have never been introduced to the idea they are irrelevant. The experience of standing in front of a class, expounding at will, handing out grades that make/break the students’ planned careers, builds a kind of arrogance that god despises. And when god despises something, it is usually removed from the scene eventually. So say I.

Most professors in colleges are after young poon-tang. They cannot start and run a business. So they "teach". And because they "teach" they can solve another problem they have. They can't get laid. So they become professors and dole out the grades to young college students in exchange for some good old fashioned sex.

I say this because just last night I was told about this. A good friend that is in college said that she had one class yesterday where her professor who is apparently the exception to the rule said he does not "play for grades". He said to the whole class that unlike some other professors he does not do that. I was astounded about this and my friend kind of chuckled and said "we all know which professors will do that, they make it very clear to us". Then she said "why do you think I dress for school the way I do? It's to keep these guys from bothering me!" I had wondered about that since I noticed how she dressed for school. She has a playboy model body which she covers up for school.

Actually, your stereotypes are far from the norm. Both my husband and I teach college, giving us an inside view. Most teachers teach because they want to and they care about students. They could make a lot more money by “doing” and have the ability to do so, but they actually enjoy teaching. Is this true of all college teachers? Of course not. But most of them are there because they teach well and care about their charges.

Imbecile or not he does have the freedom to speak. Your comment sounds like conservatives are going to reverse what patriots died for.

We have a right to free speech in this nation and if you don't like it maybe you can try the Nazi party so tough shit. Even though I don't agree with Green I will work to stop you from reversing anything our boys fought and died to preserve.

Freedom to speak is more important than your need to be pleased. Conservative my arse.

Green’s 2009 salary was $36,388 of Illinois tax dollars.

A PhD in the sociology of education gets you a $36,388 annual salary. And he has been on the staff for quite a few years. PhD in the sociology of education, $36K. There is a not so subtle message there.

Maybe she is experiencing something isolated. I’m a bit past college so I have no first hand experience as to what is going on today. She made the situation sound so matter of fact. As if it was odd for me not to know about this kind of stuff. I was amazed that the professor in her class yesterday actually told a room full of students that they can forget about “trading” him for a better grade.

Maybe there had just been an incident of this happening and students were talking about it. It DOES happen and it has happened where my husband works. But far and away the real story is how hard these people work and how dedicated they are. The professors where my husband works make a lot less than kindergarten teachers in the school district here. But they work very hard. I’ve taken a lot of classes there myself and have been very impressed. I have not found it true that teacher teach because they can’t do.
