I read a stat ten years or so past that time served for all homicides in the US averaged about 2 years.
I thought that Texas handled people like this in a more severe way.

Well, we allow infanticide already in the form of abortion on demand. From there, this isn’t that much of a leap. Maybe that’s why the law tends to go easy on women who kill their kids.

It was ten years ago and I cannot remember if it was a news item or a professional source. Remember, it encompassed ALL homicides - negligent, vehicular, involuntary manslaughter, etc., as well as intent crimes.

There's no evidence they purposefully starved the baby, and there are many reasons why a child may have trouble with even its own mother's milk, or formula, or any other food.
Basically she was sent to prison for being uneducated ~ and she's being condemned by people here who have no idea why a baby may "fail to thrive".
I looked for more information on this case but that's the thing that doesn't pop up ~ the precise cause of death.
Hey, I was lucky to make it through babyhood ~ I could hardly eat any of the standard stuff ~ just mother's milk and cream of rice. Something like most formula then available, or cream of wheat, would have killed me. Guess that makes me much more sensitive to these situations than you'd otherwise guess.

Too bad she wasn’t spayed while she was in there. There is no reason for her not to do this again. Think of the couples that would have been thrilled to adopt that baby and fill its little life with love. Too unbearably sad.

IMO, too many violent offenders are released to make room for narcotics and property offenders. This is an old argument often made, and sure to bore so I will abstain.
The Female Discount in Sentencing is a well known phenomenon. Oddly enough Feminists never demand equity in sentencing laws. Go figure.
It's even worse than that -- feminists demand that women serve even less time than they already do.

In the UK, the High Court has commanded lower court judges to show even more lenience when sentencing women. Men are now officially second class citizens there.
I wonder how long it will take for the US to adopt the same official guidelines..
