NEW YORK -- New Yorkers on food stamps would not be allowed to spend them on sugar-sweetened drinks under an obesity-fighting proposal being floated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson.

Bloomberg and Paterson planned to announce Thursday that they are seeking permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the nation's food stamp program, to add sugary drinks to the list of prohibited goods for city residents receiving assistance.

What's the old saying?

Something like: "When you take the king's coin, you play the king's tune".

What an absurd idea! Just how does one intend to enforce it?
It would require the full cooperation of the store owners. With bigger grocery store chains and computerized registers, yeah, it could be done quite easily. But the smaller outlets that don’t have access to that kind of technology it would be up to the store owner to tell his customers “no”. That ain’t gonna fly.
I’ll be danged if I’m going to invest hundreds in a check out system for my dinky lil’ store that will only alienate and tick off my customers that use the EBT cards.

There is ebt food and ebt cash. If you qualify for both, you can use ebt cash(welfare) on anything.

This is a good idea. We are paying for their health care. Why should we be buying them Coke and Twinkies?

“Are Food Stamps still printed?”

Nope, they were phased out years ago. But the moniker still stays for federal food bennies with all us geezers who remember them.

....of course gambling and cruise ships are now banned...is the ETB CARD program as secure as the social security card?...meaning can the program be beat as far as how many cards you can have?.

from another article on fraud:
“She told me if I would let her buy my groceries with her food stamp card, that I could get twice as much because if I spent $80 I would only have to give her $40 cash.”

She refused to assist the woman, but another shopper did.

To the average person, government attacking sugar and salt would be seen for what it is---an outrageous affront to the dignity of a supposedly free people. Nevermind that this is about welfare recipients. The crusade isn't limited to just those with their hand out.

The fact that these people aren't immediately rejected by an overwhelming majority of citizens demonstrates just how sick and dejected our populace is, at least in certain precincts.

Then again, this is the country that once banned alcohol, and by constitutional amendment, no less. These laws, like laws against marijuana, rob people of their dignity, and make the concept of freedom a joke.

And when the concept of freedom becomes a joke, as it has, then the argument for freedom falls on deaf ears. Freedom? What the hell is that? It's not about freedom anymore. It's about what can I get from the gubmint, and what will the gubmint allow.

There are fruit juices that have sugar in them. And what about the ones with fructose? Will those count? It says nothing about Twinkies.

I agree. Half my grocery bill is drinks. Much of them sugary crap my husband and kids drink. If I had to cut corners, they’d go. (the drinks, that is, not the husband and kids). If you are collecting food stamps, that qualifies as hard times, IMO. They should have to make the same sacrifices I would have to make in the same situation.

...absolutely....if they won’t check legal status of illegals, all the ETB card does is make it faster to commit fraud.

I see you didn't know ...

Pelosi fires back at Gingrich over food stamps
By: CNN Congressional Producer Evan Glass

(CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Wednesday strongly defended her party's support of the federal food stamp program - a day after former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich argued that GOP candidates should use the growing number of people on food stamps against Democrats on the campaign trail.

At a press conference in her home town of San Francisco, Pelosi explained that the program's multiplier effect –the amount of money generated in the local economy as the result of the subsidy– far exceeds the nearly $60 billion spent this year by the federal government and is a sure-fire way to stimulate the economy. For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, Pelosi said that $1.79 is put back into the economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture cites an even higher figure of $1.84.

“It is the biggest bang for the buck when you do food stamps and unemployment insurance. The biggest bang for the buck,” she said.

(Truly this is LIBERAL haughtiness at its worst. The gall of this bwitch is beyond civilized words.)

Gingrich on Tuesday wrote a letter critical of the Democrats’ stewardship of the economy and urged all Republican candidates to shape the political debate as one “between the Democratic Party of food stamps and the Republican Party of paychecks.”

“It is an unassailable fact that in June, more food stamps were distributed by the government than ever before in American history. (It turns out that Barack Obama’s idea of spreading the wealth around was spreading more food stamps around.),” wrote Gingrich.

Yes, AMERICANS are on more food stamps than ever in AMERICAN HISTORY.

This makes my blood boil over.

How dare these blankety blanks highlight this shameful fact as something good.

Meanwhile this blankety blank frivolously spends OUR money on:

Nancy Pelosi spends $2,993 on flowers

...

Pelosi, who has come under fire in the past for spending on flowers, also spent roughly $30,610 in food and beverage and about $2,740 on bottled water, contributing to the nearly $120,531 total from all congressional leadership accounts. Her offices defended the charges, saying the Speaker’s office holds more ceremonial events with visiting dignitaries than other congressional offices. They also use a local florist, and about a third of her flower expenses this quarter were for Jack Kemp’s funeral.

There are other offenders listed too.

Pelosi in particular really pisses me off!

I am no gawd dam serf.

Certainly “the poor” who are on food stamps should have their choices very limited.
They should not be eating convenience foods or “luxury” foods paid for by those eating rice, beans, and hamburger.
