BEIJING — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates met his Chinese counterpart, Liang Guanglie, in Vietnam on Monday for the first time since the two militaries suspended talks with each other last winter, calling for the two countries to prevent “mistrust, miscalculations and mistakes.”

Within their own country, the Chinese military are coddled, have great resources, political power, with special rights and privileges beyond those of ordinary people - and they believe their own propoganda. Of course they are arrogant.

U.S. Alarmed by Harsh Tone of China’s Military

The scary thing is not China's tone, but that the US is surprised. For several years in response to what should have been an alarming buildup, the Pentagon has either been seeing what they wanted to see and disregarding the big picture, or following political expediency to the letter.

A country doesn't build up it's military the way China has in the last several years unless it has something in mind.

“All militaries need a straw man, a perceived enemy, for solidarity,” said Huang Jing, a scholar of China’s military and leadership at the National University of Singapore. “And as a young officer or soldier, you always take the strongest of straw men to maximize the effect. Chinese military men, from the soldiers and platoon captains all the way up to the army commanders, were always taught that America would be their enemy.”

Good opportunity for India and Russia to eat China's lunch.

Hey, not to worry. I have it on good authority, (free trade proponent freepers), that we have made China LESS of a worry. You see, if we trade with them, and encourage offshoring manufacturing to China, it will raise their standard of living. The Chinese will then see the light, free trade is good for everyone! And, with the process, Americans will be freed up from those dull, meaningless jobs and will be able to pursue more important things.

So, you see. China is a harmless teddy bear. Our good friend, tied to us through economy, and would never harm us. And our people are prosperous, and busily doing more important things than manufacturing stuff we need.

Watching has not been the problem. Taking appropriate actions and preparations have been the problem. Clinton called the Chinese "our strategic partners" while selling missile secrets for cash contributions.

Bush called the Chinese "rivals" but fell short of treating them as adversaries, even after their little inauguration present of downing a P3 in international airspace. Both presidents signalled weakness.

Obama flashes not just weakness but supine submissiveness. No wonder the Chinese believe their time has come. Expect more aggressiveness, especially around the South China Sea, as China expands its hegemony into southeast Asia and Pacific.

While waiting for my wife to check out of the hospital I flipped the rooms tv and found CCTV, CHICOM TV. For 30 minutes I saw PLA war games in Central Asia along with comments from 4 star Generals.

Nothing good about it.

All of the Republican candidates should add the following phrase to their litany of reasons to not elect Democrats:

...and the build-up in aggressive Chinese rhetoric that concerns the Pentagon...

or something like that. No follow-up is necessary. Just lay the idea out there that Bambi and the D’s are concerned, but doing nothing about it.

You're mixing cliches. The "elephant in the living room" is a huge problem that people ignore until it's too late. The "800 pound gorilla" is the big, bad, boss animal that eats whatever it wants (calls the shots).

That said, you're absolutely right that the Chicoms are the elephant in the living room. We ignore them at our peril.

Well, DUH!! The Brass is just now figuring this out?! We have been saying this for years as they have been building up their strength. I’m just surprised that China has not yet made a move on Taiwan. I thought they would do it once Obama was elected. Oh well, they still have a couple years in which to accomplish that.
