The Obama administration decided on Tuesday to appeal a judge's rulings that prevented the U.S. government from banning same-sex marriages, a move that could undermine support among President Barack Obama's traditional liberal base ahead of a key election.

The Obama administration filed a notice of appeal with the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts in support of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, that barred gay marriages, even though Obama had previously opposed the law.

Although Obama opposes the law, a Justice Department spokeswoman said that the administration was defending the statute because it was obligated to defend federal laws when challenged in court.

I guess they’re trying to appear to remain consistent with being obligated to defend Federal law. I don’t see how this helps them in the election, so why didn’t they just try to kick it down the road until after the first week of November?

Hmmm.. It’s October 13th, 3 weeks away from an election and instead of getting Congress back to tell us how much we are paying in taxes next year, Obozo decides it is more important to file suit against gays. Then doesn’t say anything about DADT.

He really wants congress to be Republican. But why?

Something isn’t right here. Makes you wonder what the real plan is.

Self preservation--it's his constitutional obligation—same with defending DADT.

He hates to do it,but the GOP may get enough wins to impeach his commie arse come January.

It's simple. A massively Republican Congress can be scape-goated, the source of all woes. Oh, and since his plan is to completely destabilize the American political and economic system, having two branches duking it out in high political drama all the time will have enough of the population cooing for benevolent dictatorship before too long. Especially with a compliant media, which will start to wonder whether indeed a system of divided government can POSSIBLY work anymore.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination when your dealing with a radical ideologue and all-around dolt to see through the obvious.

This won’t hurt him a bit. Most gays are liberals first. They might complain about 0bama doing this, but at the end of the day they will still vote for him.

I agree that this is very odd. Either desperation on the part of the “dem-wits” or some other larger, unseen plan.

I think it is high time to start looking at impeaching judges that violate the Constitution. A judge may declare a law unconstitutional, but still does not have the power to create a new law from whole cloth.
