Horror of massacre at Fort Hood replays in court

The pop-pop-pop of gunfire, groans of a dying soldier and wailing from terrified survivors riveted a military courtroom Wednesday as Army prosecutors played a 911 tape of last November's massacre at a soldier-readiness center.

Eight witnesses gave graphic descriptions of the chaos unleashed when Army Maj. Nidal Hasan opened fire in the worst attack ever on an American military installation. Several recalled hearing a shout of "Allahu akbar," or "God is great," just before the melee began.

"I looked at [Hasan] and was wondering, 'Why would he say Allahu akbar?' " testified the first prosecution witness, Staff Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford. Within seconds, the sergeant added, Hasan pulled a pistol from his combat uniform and began shooting.

The dramatic testimony and the six-minute 911 recording were presented during the second day of Hasan's probable cause proceeding, known as an Article 32 hearing.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, faces 13 charges of premeditated murder and 32 charges of premeditated attempted murder. The Nov. 5 attack ended when two civilian police officers engaged Hasan in a gunbattle. He was shot four times and left paralyzed from the chest down.

When the shooting ended, what had been a busy medical processing center looked like "the worst horror movie you could possibly ever see," testified mental health specialist James Armstrong, an Army reservist from Maine. "There's blood everywhere. Blood handprints on walls ... pools of blood on the floor."

"Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who allegedly killed 11 people [count now 13, or 14 if you include the unborn child of the 21-year-old female soldier -etl] before being shot and wounded by police at Fort Hood, had said Muslims should "rise up" and attack Americans in retaliation for the US war in Iraq, a former army colleague said."

"He said Muslims should stand up and fight the aggressor and that we should not be in the war in the first place." He said that Major Hasan said he was "happy" when a US soldier was killed in an attack on a military recruitment centre in Arkansas in June. An American convert to Islam was accused of the shootings.

Col Lee alleged that other officers had told him that Major Hasan had said "maybe people should strap bombs on themselves and go to Times Square" in New York."

Go up the chain of command as far as you can go. There’s where you will find the other person responsible for the murders, besides the obvious one. The person who gave the order and set up the rules and procedures that made the immediate supervisors sacrifice innocent people on the altar of political correctness.
