US communists called for unity against McCarthy-style witch-hunts at the weekend.
Their appeal came in the wake of a series of raids on the homes of 12 peace activists during which computers and photographs were seized.
The Communist Party USA (CPUSA) said the September 24 raids had nothing to do with protecting the US people against terrorism and "everything to do with chilling the long-cherished tradition of the right to dissent."
FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force agents ransacked the activists' homes across the Midwest for evidence of "material support" for organisations such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia which are on US terror blacklists.
None of those whose homes came under investigation were charged with any crime.
Trade union organiser Joe Iosbaker and his teacher wife Stephanie Weiner were surprised to find officials standing on the front porch of their Chicago home shortly before 7am.
Ms Weiner said up to 25 agents "turned the house upside down" for 10 hours and rummaged through boxes from the '70s and '80s in the couple's attic before removing items.
The Chicago home of Arab American Action Network executive director Hatem Abudayyeh was also searched.
And in Minneapolis-St Paul six more homes of anti-war activists were searched, along with the offices of the Minnesota Anti-War Committee.
The CPUSA said the raids resulted from the repressive set of laws and institutions developed since the passage of the Anti-Terrorism Act in 1996 and the Patriot Act rushed through Congress by President Bush after September 11 2001.
The party stressed that it did not ignore the "real danger" of terrorism but said the raids had nothing to do with protecting the US people against terrorism but "everything to do with quashing these activists' right to free speech."
Drawing a parallel with the McCarthy period when CPUSA leaders and members were jailed or fired from their jobs and blacklisted, it said the hysteria and persecution "severely curtailed democracy and free speech, stained our constitution and distorted political discourse for a generation."
It called on the US people to be vigilant in defence of their constitutional rights.
And it urged the Justice Department to end the harassment of peace and justice activists and Congress to repeal the undemocratic and repressive aspects of the Patriot Act.
Couldn't happen to a nicer more patriotic bunch of people.../s
give me a break!
read w. stanton evan’s “blacklisted by history”
and then get back to me.
McCarthy was right the first time. They should talk to their pal Obama about the Patriot Act. Not our problem, commies.
We could only hope...
From the same maggots who call Christine O'Donnell a witch. Geeesh! You can't make this crap up.
Horsepucky. Joe McCarthy was an American hero, he didn't conduct witch-hunts, the commies must be thinking of Henry Waxman.
ha ha!
whatever needs to happen, needs to happen, For the survival of this nation.
Let’s bring back the HUAAC. Senator McCarthy was correct in saying the Federal Government, the United Nations, the political parties (especially the Democrats), the trade unions, Hollywood and so much more, as we found out after the demise of the Soviet Union.
“US communists called for unity against McCarthy-style witch-hunts at the weekend. “
Why hunt them only on the weekends? It needs to be 24/7 365.
“whatever needs to happen, needs to happen, For the survival of this nation.” <-———— THIS
These commies need to take up their complaint with the commie-in-chief, Hussein Obama. He is the ultimate boss of the FBI.
A commie is a commie, there were no witch-hunts.
Joe McCarthy was a patriot and dead on the money.
And by CP I mean the COMMUNIST PIGS.

Thats rich; sneaks, cheats and liars trying to preemptively deter common-sense.
Although, McCarthy did not have his ducks in a row; he was correct.
“Drawing a parallel with the McCarthy period when CPUSA leaders and members were jailed or fired from their jobs and blacklisted,”
Bring back McCarthy. We could then fire there leader, now in the White House, and maybe put him in jail for treason.
