Driver thanks man who hit him on purpose
Seattle Times ^ | 2010-10-20 | Sean Collins Walsh

Driving to a Mariners game, Duane Innes saw a pickup ahead of him drift across lanes of traffic, sideswipe a concrete barrier and continue forward on the inside shoulder at about 40 mph.

A manager of Boeing's F22 fighter-jet program, Innes dodged the truck, then looked back to see that the driver was slumped over the wheel. He knew a busy intersection was just ahead, and he had to act fast. Without consulting the passengers in his minivan — "there was no time to take a vote" — Innes kicked into engineer mode.

"Basic physics: If I could get in front of him and let him hit me, the delta difference in speed would just be a few miles an hour, and we could slow down together," Innes explained.

So he pulled in front of the pickup, allowed it to rear-end his minivan and brought both vehicles safely to a stop in the pull-off lane.

As usual the news title is backwards.

He didn’t hit the unconscious driver’s car.

He was hit when he slowed down to safefully stop both cars.

make a hero of himself

Are you only motivated by the opportunity for notoriety?

Bill clinton would have applointed a blue ribbon committee

Obama would have appointed a czar

the MSM would have blambed bush.

pelosi would be saying how the accident created jobs

reid would say we need healthcare reform again.

Bank of America would forclose on the van’s chrysler loan saying they owned the loan all along.

Code Pink would blame the military.

the homosexual groups would condemn the fact a homosexual was not driving the rescue vehicle and blam DADT

A judge would retroactivly demand the accident be undone.

Michael Steel would still be nowhere to be seen.

MSNBC would be blaming global warming.

the NYT will not cover the story.

CNN would only rescue the driver if he was a leftist.

"...I might question whether he had the right to risk other people's lives to make a hero of himself."

It doesn't sound like he did it "to make a hero of himself." I suspect his motivations were otherwise.

Really? Would it have been o’k to risk his own life even if it meant his kids could end up fatherless? Every risk can end up in loss that is why it is called risk. The bigger risk was Daddy doing nothing and letting the kids know its all about them even if it resulted in the death of others.

They were his kids, they don’t always get a vote.

Shame on me. I should have read the article more carefully; then I would have known they were only children. I thought they were adults. Disregard my previous comments.

Quite so. People like Duane Innes are the ones who ensure the continuity of the species, and make civilization possible. I would have thought the desire to assist, if possible, would be a basic human baseline norm. In fact, I believe it still is, despite the encroachments of “urban values”.

I'm glad everything worked out, but I might question whether he had the right to risk other people's lives to make a hero of himself.

A crash at a busy intersection would have been a disaster and could have resulted in the injury/deaths of even more people. He made the right choice.

Snarky is so unattractive.

If your children have a say on to how you run your life sounds like a personal problem. So does commenting without reading

They don't. That's why I support abortion on demand.

I had something similar happen several years ago on 59 North between Houston and Humble.

A car was weaving back and forth across three lanes. The guy driving kept slumping over in the seat and his head would disappear. I though he was having a heart attack, so I decided to do the same thing. I was going to let him hit the back of my truck and I would stop him before he killed someone.

When I got up beside him I looked over at him to try and tell him what I was going to do.

The guy wasn't having a heart attack, he was eating noodles with chopsticks out of a Tupperware bowl, and he was sticking his head down to shove the noodles in his face.

I honked at the guy, and he cussed me out and snapped his chopsticks at me.

Tell me again the part about how you can’t stop a Toyota with a stuck gas pedal by applying the brakes.
