Dispute over New Black Panthers case causes deep divisions (MSM Finally Notices NBP Case)

On Election Day 2008, Maruse Heath, the leader of Philadelphia's New Black Panther Party, stood in front of a neighborhood polling place, dressed in a paramilitary uniform.

Within hours, an amateur video showing Heath, slapping a black nightstick and exchanging words with the videographer, had aired on TV and ricocheted across the nation.

Among those who saw the footage was J. Christian Adams, who was in his office in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division in Washington.

"I thought, 'This is wrong, this is not supposed to happen in this country,' " Adams said. "There are armed men in front of a polling place, and I need to find out if they violated the law, because in my mind there's a good chance that they did."

The clash between the black nationalist and the white lawyer has mushroomed into a fierce debate over the government's enforcement of civil rights laws, a dispute that will be aired next week when the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights unveils findings from a year-long investigation.

Hmmmmm...interesting. The Commission unveils its findings next week....just in time for the election. The timing couldn't be better.

At this point, I wish we could import the Chinese police to deal with this filth.

I’m not sure I trust the commission at this point.

A little off topic (but not really): how many Freepers write a comment then think “Uhhh, no, I don’t want to put that in writing”. I just did. Am I the only one here who wonders if there’s a file somewhere with my screen name written on it? Has there ever been a thread on this subject? Should I not be putting this in writing?

Typical WaPo -- it's really all about Bush & the evil white man. Almost every paragraph pits "good" and "evil". To wit:

The clash between the black nationalist and the white lawyer has mushroomed into a fierce debate over the government's enforcement of civil rights laws,

Two months after Election Day, Adams and his supervisors in the George W. Bush administration filed a voter-intimidation lawsuit against Heath and his colleagues, even though no voters had complained.

This one is especially insidious: the case tapped into deep divisions within the Justice Department that persist today over whether the agency should focus on protecting historically oppressed minorities or enforce laws without regard to race.

The dispute over the Panthers, and the Justice Department's handling of it, was politicized from the start, documents and interviews show. On Election Day, the issue was driven by Republican poll watchers and officials and a conservative Web site.

The Post clearly wants their readers to walk away with the idea that this is all just "typical white people" worried about the browning of our nation. Still, one wonders how many their readers were even aware of this incident before today.

Do you know an easy way to spot the cowards? All you have to do is ask how they lost all their guns in that boating accident.
It wasn’t funny the first time.

I agree with you regarding the editorial bias of the story. However, I think that the sheer number of facts that accumulate by the end point to a very different picture.

You and I have disagreed a lot. But if you ever see something like that posted under my screen name you will know that I am dead.

I will never lose my guns. I will never dispose of my guns. If you hear that Lurker no longer has his guns you will know that Lurker is no more.

When your Nation is at War you either stand on the line and fight or you hide and perish..
If you are afraid to speak honetly and openly then you are already a victim of that war.

"Everyone in the room understood exactly what she meant," Coates said. "No more cases like the Ike Brown or New Black Panther Party cases."

snip

Fernandes declined to comment through a department spokeswoman.

Justice Department officials say they treat everyone equally.

Doesn't look like Julie Fernandes says DOJ treats everyone equally and she's a DOJ official.

Her saying that has been corroborated by at least one other (Christian Adams).

Surprised this story came out in WaPo, they and most of the enemedia have ignored it. Really happy to see it come out now, maybe the story will be picked up by others that have ignored it.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks, I watched his testimony that day and he was impressive, didn’t pull any punches at all.

I thought the best part was Yaki trying to make Coates look bad, all Yaki did was make himself look the fool he is.

Wa Po editor to Markon, Thompson, Shackleford and Tate:

We’ve ignored this about as long as we can. We need something in print before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights releases it’s report next week. It needs to appear we’ve been out front on this all along.

Give me 2500 words, but don’t draw any conclusions. As usual, feel free to slam conservatives.
