Wolf recovery brings backlash in Congress

KALISPELL, Mont. — Rep. Denny Rehberg, who manages a ranch outside Billings, Mont., knows quite literally what it means to have the wolf at the door: A single wolf killed 51 prized cashmere goats in his pasture years ago.

" 'Shoot, shovel and shut up' is a joke in Montana," said Rehberg, referring to a long-standing reference among landowners across the West — perhaps only half in jest — to the best way to deal with a federally protected endangered species like the gray wolf.

The reintroduction of the wolf in the northern Rocky Mountains has been so contentious that Rehberg, a Republican, is joining a group of congressmen preparing an unusual move to aim their weapons at the Endangered Species Act itself.

Bills introduced in Congress in recent weeks would either remove the act's protection of wolves in the Northwest or, as proposed by Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Texas, forbid any listing at all of the once nearly extinct predator. Biologists say that outcome could jeopardize recovery efforts in the Southwest and Midwest and in fledgling new populations in Washington and Oregon.

Ever since the environmentalists started introducing these monster wolves into the lower 48, the rule has been “shoot, shovel, and shut up”. Same rule holds for the wolves.

This whole wolf thing is about more than just wolves. Look at the horizon, instead of closer to your feet. The ultimate goal it their soviet style utopia.

Like I said earlier, they want to reduce the deer and elk herds to bring them to protected status, then outlaw hunting, then outlaw guns.

This serves several purposes.

You are disarmed. There is no food outside of the approved channels. As such they can control a populace that is dependent on them for food, and as such you can be brought to heel by starvation. Subsistence does not give you the energy or resources for resistance. If you do resist you die, and they don’t have to put a bullet in you, they can starve you out.

They are destroying the “arsenal of democracy”. Once it is done, they can try to destroy us from the outside. But they cannot destroy us from within. They must soften the underbelly and deny the populace the ability to resist in order for any external force to have any chance for success.

I know that this may sound a little tin-foil hat-ish, and to some degree it is. However, you must ask yourself: if you wanted to destroy the USA, how would you go about it? What would you have to do to accomplish this? The answer becomes obvious.

I would rather have elk than wolves.

I don't eat carnivores.
