Wolf recovery brings backlash in Congress
Los Angeles Times ^ | October 21, 2010 | Kim Murphy

KALISPELL, Mont. — Rep. Denny Rehberg, who manages a ranch outside Billings, Mont., knows quite literally what it means to have the wolf at the door: A single wolf killed 51 prized cashmere goats in his pasture years ago.

" 'Shoot, shovel and shut up' is a joke in Montana," said Rehberg, referring to a long-standing reference among landowners across the West — perhaps only half in jest — to the best way to deal with a federally protected endangered species like the gray wolf.

The reintroduction of the wolf in the northern Rocky Mountains has been so contentious that Rehberg, a Republican, is joining a group of congressmen preparing an unusual move to aim their weapons at the Endangered Species Act itself.

Bills introduced in Congress in recent weeks would either remove the act's protection of wolves in the Northwest or, as proposed by Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Texas, forbid any listing at all of the once nearly extinct predator. Biologists say that outcome could jeopardize recovery efforts in the Southwest and Midwest and in fledgling new populations in Washington and Oregon.

Wish I was. I actually live in the Seattle area currently but am a Wyoming native. My parents live in Jackson Hole and alot of my family is in Casper, which is where I am from. Spent years in Laramie going to school.

Even though I currently live here I will always think of Wyoming as home and I pass through there at least once a year.

What part do you hail from?

Historically, American wolves avoided man. Only in Eastern Europe and Asia were wolves known to attack humans.

The response ot the American wolf was best described by the first Roosevelt Naturalist in Yellowstone Park, on page 109 in The Yellowstone Park Nature Book, 1924 ...”they learned to their great regret that nearly every man and boy carried a rifle”.

When Y’All shoot enough of those wolves, the rest will relearn what their ancestor wolves once knew.

When gunpowder speaks, beasts obey.

The unstated goal is to reduce the elk and deer herds to levels below sustainable hunting so that they can ban hunting, and then claim that they need more habitat and reduce the sprawl of cities and towns.

It’s never what it seems. Saving the wolf is s ruse to distract from the true goal.

Not so much here in the Laramie area, but they are starting to be reported in the Medicine Bow Range and northward. Here it’s mostly mountain lions - which you need a tag for. The major wolf issues are in mostly in the north-western part of the state - Yellowstone, Jacksonhole, areas.

“Saving the wolf is s ruse to distract from the true goal.”

GOOD LINE ! ! !

“The establishment of an American soviet government will require the confiscation of large landed estates in both town and country, and the entirety of lakes, rivers, forests, and mineral deposits”.

You are correct. The Wolves, hunting in packs the size never seen before, have almost eliminated the elk herds in Yellowstone. A good friend lives in the Cody AO. He makes no bones about anything to incude the wolf/wolves and the destruction they do.

They have told us what they want to do, and they will use all sorts of subterfuge, to attain them.

Reintroduce the wolf, to reduce the deere and elk hers below hunting levels, then ban hunting. If you cannot hunt, then there is no reason for you to have firearms.

Since the populations are so low there is the need to confiscate the land of farmers and reduce suburban sprawl to provide more habitat for the reduced herds to prevent extinction.

Once they can get us disarmed they can then move toward their soviet-style utopia.

That's a great idea now that you mention it. Plenty of illegals for them to eat.

Hmm. I was to slow to get the agenda 21 link, but it makes perfect sense.

Between Big Sky MT and the Park (Yellowstone). I know this is anecdotal, but I have lived here my entire life so... We don’t get a lot of wolves that stay in our valley. They often move on to the next valley to our west (Madison Valley). We have seen a further increase in bears in our valley (especially Grizzlies) and the elk population has dropped. The moose population is what has really dropped.
You used to see them often in the park. We still see them around the house, but you can tell the numbers have dropped dramatically. How this all relates to the wolf...I am not sure. But I am sure that they have had an impact on the numbers of these animals as well as the cattle numbers in the Madison Valley
