Everything you thought you knew about food is WRONG...

Fibre's bad for you. Fat's healthy. And five-a-day is a gimmick to make fruit and veg firms rich. Or so claims a remarkable new book

'We think we know what to eat: less red meat and more fibre, less saturated fat and more fruit and veg, right? Wrong, according to a controversial new book by obesity researcher and nutritionist Zoe Harcombe.

In The Obesity Epidemic: What Caused It? How Can We Stop It? Harcombe charts her meticulous journey of research into studies that underpin dietary advice — and her myth-busting conclusions are startling.'

My friend ( is a truth teller) says I don’t look fat. But I feel fat. Big differrence.
The scale ofcourse tells the truth.

I always think that people that say Americans EAT to much, don’t have a clue. I eat one (1) meal a day.
My Doc says I shouldn’t do that due to being too hungry when I do it. Not true. I eat a normal portion.
So it has to be something else. I’m thinking it is not how much I eat but WHAT I eat. I am a purist as far as food is concerned.(no processed, never add salt, that kind of thing)

So I am going to give the proteins a chance to work.
Hope this is the answer.

I've known a lot of lazy, fat people who smoked and drank as they pleased.

Everything in moderation, sez me.

Stressing over what you eat, and how much you exercise, has got to be as bad for you as NOT eating right, and NOT exercising. Likely worse.

My opinion only. Your mileage may vary.

I'm a swimmer and have been for 20 years this year; currently, I typically swim five to seven miles a week (between a 1 1/3 (2600 yards) to 1 2/3 miles (3100 yards) per day, three to five mornings a week. Take my advice and THROW AWAY THE SCALE. Replace it with a tape measurer. Swimming will build muscle while it burns fat, so you'll trim down but not lose nearly as much in pounds as what you're used to if you've only done aerobic/cardiovascular calorie burns. I am a relatively trim size 6, but my weight is more in line with what I would have weighed wearing a size 8 and tightly at that. Muscle is incredibly dense!

When I first switched to swimming as a replacement for walking briskly up and down very steep hills (the swimming kept my blood pressure down; the walking didn't), I lost inches but GAINED weight. Being a vain younger woman at the time, it drove me nuts because I was so hung up on the numbers. I finally got wise and threw the scale away; haven't owned one for two decades.

GET A BATHING SUIT -- do your poolmates a favor and don't wear cotton in the pool because the lint that comes out of it is hell on the filters. Speedo's "Endurance" line is a polyster-type suit that will last for a VERY long time, where its regular lycra suits (or the lycra suits from any swimwear company) will AT BEST hold up for only about 20 swims before bagging-out and fading.

FReepmail me if you want tips on how to really make swimming a comfortable, fun and super workout. I'll share with you things that took me many years of trial and error to learn! :^) I can even clue you in to the best websites where you can get the best prices on swim gear.

Good luck and God bless. I’ve been fat and I’ve been thin. I feel better thin, but it’s hard to stay that way.

Unfortunately there are politics involved in telling people what to eat.

" So now I’m totally confused about what to eat. "

Cooked foods taste better, so enjoy it.... life is short to worry about the small things.

Besides ? when you do cook your food, the heat kills any germs that maybe in the raw food.....

After my back surgery my surgeon told me to get back in the pool. It scared me at first. But it is a GREAT exercise. I feel like a new person. Thanks for the encouragement.

I use to walk 3 miles a day. Hated it then and it was H on my knees.
I don’t mind the weight thing as long as I can fit in my size 6 jeans again.
I’m glad I’m not the only one struggling to regain healthy lifestyles.

Interesting. I was in the hospital this year. I put on my diet card that I could not have wheat or sugar. They constantly brought me foods with wheat and sugar! It was as if they could not figure out what to feed a person who could not eat those things. I found almost impossible to believe. I managed to eat around it, but sheesh.

Old news. I have been on the Atkins diet for 11 years. I feel (and look) better in my 40s than I did in my late 20s. Fat is good for you. We are predators and our bodies were meant to consume MEAT!!! :)

I swore by Atkins for a long time but couldn’t stick with it for two reasons; I was continually tired and my health overall kept going downhill.

Two pieces of the puzzle finally solved my problems. First, I NEED a balance of protein, carbs and fat. Good carbs, such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, etc. Good fat as in olive oil and fish oil. When I have that balance (equal oxidizer) I have energy all day long.

The other I may get flamed for is going organic. Especially organic dairy. Also being selective with meats and fish; if I want salmon, it must be wild Alaskan salmon. It’s not about “saving the environment” for me, it’s about not allowing junk in our foods to disrupt my hormones. Since going organic, the weight just comes right off, my strength is coming back, and I’m getting relief from so many aches and pains. For the first time in years, maybe decades, I just might get through a full year without missing work due to illness.

Some vegetables are better for you when they’re cooked, such as brocolli and tomatoes. Many of my vegetables are cooked in soups or sauteed’; on occasion, they’re steamed. In the end, I don’t sweat the cooking part too much. If you want it raw, have it raw. “Variety...”, don’t ya know?...

It seems that I read all of this years and years ago, but the author's name was "Atkins."

This is all true, but hardly shocking and new.

I feel best when I eat meals based on the four basic food groups.

Alcohol, caffeine, sugar and fat? Peg Bracken somewhere cites Irish coffee as the perfect food based on those four basic food groups! ;-)

He did not say that. He said he’s seen it happen. I think it happens more than some people believe. I don’t smoke and have never smoked. I reserve drinking for celebrations and other special occasions. I exercise (not as much as I should) and I do take care to eat a balanced diet.

But I don’t think half of this matters as much as the gene lotto.

Would haveing your gall bladder removed ( had 1 cm gallstone), talk about fetal position pain.

Anyway, I notice that since then I have had this problem. It seems I am not processing food properly.

I have tried everything. All I get from my Doc is it more fish. Now I love fish but Doc, give me a break.

The reason I am leaning towards the protein diet is for muscle health and connective tissue health. when nothing seems to fit the situation, people are left their own devices.

The gall bladder stores bile and then squirts it out in controlled doses in response to fat in diet. The bile emulsifies the fat so that it can be absorbed. The reason that gall bladder disease hurts is usually because of gall stones getting caught in the bile duct. This causes spasming of the duct. Activation of stretch receptors can result in extreme pain. After having the gall bladder removed, the liver still produces bile, but it makes its way in a more uncontrolled fashion to the small intestine in response to ingested fat. Too much bile dumped at once can cause diarrhea and a lot of intestinal distress. It took me years before I started adjusting after having my gall bladder removed. I just had to make sure I had immediate access to a restroom when going out to dinner. It's not so bad 19 years later.

If you have an amount of meat the size of a pack of cigarettes per day, you'll have far more than enough protein for all your protein needs. The one most essential ingredient for good connective tissues is vitamin C (though not too much because it can have a laxative effect in large doses). You can't make collagen without it. It's essential for wound healing. Unless you have a small bowel disease that impairs nutrient absorption, if you have a great enough food intake to satisfy your gross kilocalorie needs from a wide variety of foodstuffs over the course of a couple weeks, you'll have about all the vitamins and minerals you need to prevent vitamin deficiency diseases. You may need something extra to boost calcium intake (not bone meal since that can contain heavy metals) and vitamin D if you're not getting enough sun. There are many long term unexplained pains that have been found to codistribute with very low vitamin D levels and which, after supplementation with vitamin D, have been resolved successfully. Too low a vitamin C level can also result in vague pains in muscles and joints.

Is anything to an excess bad? Yes.

An excess of too much red meat is bad, as is an excess of avoiding meat.

An excess of too much fat is bad, as is an excess of avoiding fat.

An excess of too much carbohydrates, particularly starchy carbohydrates is bad, as is an excess of avoiding carbohydrates.

An excess of too much sugar is bad, as is an excess of avoiding sugar (same for salt).

In other words, just like the old adage said: “All things in moderation accepted” (or words to that effect)

I have never eaten anything, any type of food one could call “diet”, not even “diet” soft-drinks. I have always preferred “the real thing”. I have also never been morbidly obese.

I had a friend who ate nearly everything he could in “diet” (or “non-fat”) form (depending on the type of item). He was always dieting and always struggling to keep his weight down. One night while sharing “game night” at his house, we watched him single-handedly consume 1/2 of a half-gallon of so-called “diet” ice-cream.

I told him: “You know what your problem is? In spite of the “low calorie” count in so much of the food you eat, you probably consume far more calories a day than I do. Your form of dieting is not leaving you hungry all the time because you don’t get enough calories. Your body is hungry all the time because the calories you do give it are never satisfying - TO YOUR BODY. It never gets enough natural food. Your body is never satisfied with the “diet” chemical factory you keep feeding it with.” (which is not the same thing as “tastes good”)

Anyone that says being a fat lazy smoker doesn't matter is smokin' something.
