In another boon for Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, write-in ballots cast for Republican candidate Joe Miller won’t count toward his total vote count. Alaska’s Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell, who oversees elections, told the Associated Press that write-in ballots for Miller will be tossed out.

Well, why were folks writing in Joe’s name when his name was on the darned ballot!

Maybe they should refuse to count those votes on the ground that whoever cast them is just too darn dumb to be a voter.

He’s a legitimate write in candidate. If they didn’t want people to write in his name, they shouldn’t have put his name on the approved list of write in candidates. It isn’t the responsibility of the voter to explain why they voted a certain way. It is the responsibility of the voter to mark the ballot in such a way that their clear intent can be known.

Can you say “Equal protection under the law?”

Not in Alaska, apparently.

I saw some show on TV recently about Alaska. And the people on it said that Anchorage is very progressive, and bragged that they have three major gay bars there.

Well, if that indicates being progressive, I guess Anchorage has joined the club.

I think this is much ado about nothing. There are no write in votes to speak of for Miller. Having faith in his supporters, I’m convinced they were all smart enough to select his name on the ballot.

Democrats have no idea how to run a country, which is ironic when you consider they have perfected the art of stealing an election.

I wrote in the name of a candidate that was on my ballot.

I accidentally started to fill in the wrong oval - "write-in" - and
since I was about a third of the way through the ballot, I wrote in
the guy that was listed as "Democrat/Republican", rather than go
get a fresh ballot and start completely over again.

I predicted on a thread a week ago that ALL write in votes, regardless of spelling, would count for Princess Lisa. Which is probably exactly what is happening.

A person who writes in "John Smith" or "Bonzo the Wonder Chimp" will have that vote COUNTED as "Lisa Murkowski". If there's a stray pencil mark on the ballot anywhere, it's a vote for Lisa!

Miller was not on the list of write-in candidates as far as I can tell. His name was on the list of candidates in general here:

http://www.elections.alaska.gov/ci_pg_cl_2010_genr.php

But not listed as a write in.

Alaska Statute:

http://touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/Statutes/Title15/Chapter25/Section105.htm

AS 15.25.105. Write-in Candidates.

(a) If a candidate does not appear on the primary election ballot or is not successful in advancing to the general election and wishes to be a candidate in the general election, the candidate may file as a write-in candidate. Votes for a write-in candidate may not be counted unless that candidate has filed a letter of intent with the director stating

He’s on the list of candidates but not as a write-in.

I recall that too, and how can you hand voters a list, and then claim that voting for one of the people on the list is not valid? I know that if I was voting in Alaska, I sure as heck would have written in his name, just to annoy the COW supporters.

Yep. Miller was never a write-in candidate, nor was he ever listed as one as far as I can tell. People misinterpreted the candidate list I guess.

Miller was not on the write in list at all. Not online, and not on paper.

Sometimes you want to support the guy but not his party so you do a write in...a lot of folks do that. I’ve done that sort of thing before! Not to count Miller’s name on the write in candidates list is clearly illegal and the courts would quickly agree!

OK Alaskans, its time to "boil the tar" and "pluck the feathers" this Lt. Governor needs seein' to!

Thanks. I think you're correct. If Miller wasn't on that little piece of paper they handed out, he shouldn't be an official write in candidate.

However, if they're going to go strictly by the letter of the law, then any votes for Lucy Milchowski should have the bubble filled in and the name written down "Lilly Mulwanksi" or whatever, exactly as it was on the official list of write-in candidates.

Litigate or Liberty suffocates. No more letting the corrupt get away with fraud because they know we are too polite to litigate.

True politeness means finding a way to retrain, shut down or isolate the impolite. Avoid litigation to empower the crude and venal.

May not win this go-round but next go-round, they’ll remember the welts they we raised on them.
