Interesting. A favorite quote of mind from Anderson is “I only had a high school education and believe me, I had to cheat to get that.
A quote of his: I don’t want to embarrass any other catcher by comparing him to Johnny Bench.
1984, great year....thank you Sparky.
Rest In Peace.
My sentiments exactly. I was just a little tyke when my Grandparents took me to the opening day parade in Cincy in the early 70's and I got Sparkys autograph on my ball glove.
My Grandparents had traveled south for the Reds spring training for years and they had talked to Sparky alot that spring, so he stopped to say hi to them after the parade and they introduced me.
As young as I was I vaguely remember knowing that Sparky was a big deal, but I was still too young to fully appreciate how great of a manager he was for the Reds.
RIP Sparky. Thanks for the memories.
A great man and an outstanding manager. He will be sadly missed. RIP Sparky.
RIP.
We also lost Ralph Houk this year, too.
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
D*mn screen is all blurry
A grand slam ball that never has to land......RIP.
RIP Sparky you were a class act thanks for the memories!! We’ll miss you :(
In Sparky's case, Ohio and Michigan
Thank you again, BluesDuke, for your post yesterday. It was a fitting tribute for Sparky.
Requiescat in pace.
Thank you again for your kind words, Maggie. I’ve rewritten the piece accordingly; its on my blog and in the queue for publication at Sports-Central.org . . .
You are very welcome. It was a good article.
Thanks very much for the ping, grellis.
Condolences to Sparky’s family and friends. This great man brought so many positives to the game of baseball.

Game Called
Game Called by darkness let the curtain fall.
No more remembered thunder sweeps the field.
No more the ancient echoes hear the call
To one who wore so well both sword and shield:
The Big Guys left us with the night to face
And there is no one who can take his place.
Game Called and silence settles on the plain.
Where is the crash of ash against the sphere?
Where is the mighty music, the refrain
That once brought joy to every waiting ear?
The Big Guys left us lonely in the dark
Forever waiting for the flaming spark.
Game Called what more is there for us to say?
How dull and drab the field looks to the eye
For one who ruled it in a golden day
Has waved his cap to bid us all good-bye.
The Big Guys gone by land or sea or foam
May the Great Umpire call him safe at home.
