Gates urges Congress to repeal gay ban now

MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Congress should act quickly, before new members take their seats, to repeal the military's ban on gays serving openly in the military.

He, however, did not sound optimistic that the current Congress would use a brief postelection session to get rid of the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

"I would like to see the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" but I'm not sure what the prospects for that are," Gates said Saturday, as he traveled to defense and diplomatic meetings in Australia.

Unless the lame-duck Congress acts, the repeal effort is considered dead for now.

The Left is set to ram the rest of their agenda through while they still have power. And who is going to stop them - the GOP eunuchs?

I don’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

Is Gates even a Republican? What a useless tool.

At one time, a lot of FReepers admired this a-hole. He's done absolutely nothing but tow the Maobama line at every step along the way. IMO he's a disgrace.

If he's in the the Obamao admin he's a tool.

And this from the article as well:

“Gates also urged the Senate to ratify a stalled arms control treaty with Russia before the end of the current legislative session in January.”

What the hell is this guy’s problem? He was chosen by Bush? What is his background? I can’t hardly believe the things, the perverted ideas that are in the minds of these people. It’s out of control when the secretary of defense is advocating this bullcrap.

No I am damned angry at this man. He may be my highest ranking boss after the president but he is NOT listening. AT ALL.

For months now (just ended last month) the DOD web page portal had a link for us to sound off about gays in the military. Asking us without fear of retribution or feelings on impact and more. He has to be totally kidding me that he simply is dismissing us on the issue. This process may be the only secret one but all all the open venues for our positions on the subject are overwhelmingly against repeal. HE KNOWS THIS..I can only surmise that the private process is the same. NOTHING leads me to be a total reversal is what members want. Every vote in this country stands against the homosexual agenda...the big lie that it is and more. They want government acknowledged legitimacy PERIOD.

I will NEVER GIVE THEM this.

Maybe someone out there can help ?

A court in california over turned the "don't ask/don't tell", Why did Obama appeal that ruling ?

If Gates wanted this so bad, why not simply lobby his boss, not to appeal the decision ?

As I understand it, he is a technocrat, with few core principles.

I think O likes endorsing the crazy idea that the courts have any say over the internal workings of the military. A sane CIC would have instructed the Pentagon to ignore the ruling.

I'm not sure how a CIC could ignore a court ruling, that said, if he is so pro gay, I don't see why not allow the ruling to stand, but that said, if he could just ignore a court ruling, why not then go a step further and ignore the law altogether (if he felt so strongly about it).

I can see why a President would appeal the decision, I can't see why he appealed the decision however.....

Wasn’t there supposed to be a complete review of the military personnel’s opinion of the present policy and their reaction to the end of that policy? Let’s see the result of that review first.

I understand that there’s a severe shortage of clergy in the military.

If DADT is “repealed” there will be zero tolerance for clergy who cannot endorse homosexuality and the number able to serve will dwindle even more. All that will be left will be the secular progressive “clergy” but that’s probably part of the agenda as well.

It’s obvious now that Gate’s mission is to destroy our defenses in a stealth mode!
