The state of Oklahoma is planning to execute death row inmates with drugs intended for use on animals.
Lawmakers want to switch away from the only brand of anaesthetic that has been used in the US for lethal injections because there is not enough to go around.
The replacement is likely to attract controversy because it is currently used by vets to anesthetise animals for operations.
Other states are watching closely and may well follow suit, but such a move is likely to face a challenge from human rights groups to ensure that it is safe to use.

I wonder if the government has given someone a grant to study the long term side effects. I would like to see the warning label.
So?
So?

God of Compassion,
You let your rain fall on the just and the unjust.
Expand and deepen our hearts
so that we may love as You love,
even those among us
who have caused the greatest pain by taking life.
For there is in our land a great cry for vengeance
as we fill up death rows and kill the killers
in the name of justice, in the name of peace.
Jesus, our brother,
you suffered execution at the hands of the state
but you did not let hatred overcome you.
Help us to reach out to victims of violence
so that our enduing love may help them heal.
Holy Spirit of God,
You strengthen us in the struggle for justice.
Help us to work tirelessly
for the abolition of state-sanctioned death
and to renew our society in its very heart
so that violence will be no more. Amen.

Infecting them with hempen fever would work
“If someone is imprisoned for life and can do no more harm to the innocent - they should not be deliberately killed.”
And you’ll volunteer to cage, clean and feed ‘em for the rest o’ their natural days?
But, but, we must conserve our limited resources!
Heck, when you think about it, we could turn it into a festival of sorts, picnics, small games, and cheerleaders.
Lifetime inmates can end up getting paroled. If there is irrefutable cast iron evidence, then killers have no business getting a life sentence.
That was my thought. If we’re going to look at how we kill animals as a solution, why not use slaughterhouse methods? Do they still use sledgehammers? That would work. Of course, if they’re muslim, we should respect that and keep them halal. Slit their throats and let them bleed to death.
I’m sure these drugs will Safely put down these animals. As long as enough is administered.
And how do you know they aren't doing harm...to fellow inmates?
Capital punishment is just, and it's right.
Using the same drug (an overdose of an anesthetic) is something that I have long wondered about. Even asked the question last week on a FR thread but got no answer.
Of the dogs of mine that I have seen “put to sleep” this way, neither seemed distressed at all. It was over in about five or so seconds as the heart stopped.
It’s the way I would want to go. (But I don’t it done under my resistance in Oklahoma!)
Better yet, why don’t they use a nice piece of new rope.
***Used by vets to kill animals.....hmmmm....animals......and?***
Black Leaf-40?
Nicotine sulfate (or sulfide) works wonders! Six xeconds at the most on a horse!
There are ‘anesthetics’ & ‘tranquilizers’ & there are ‘euthanasia’ drugs.
Not the same.
Often a large animal is given a heavy dose of Tranq & then given the euthanasia drug. It is very swift.
Good idea. Let the perp hang there for a week or so to get the message across. Worked in Merry Olde England.
My apologies to all who still believe in the Meat Case Fairy delivering meat in small cellophane wrapped packages.”
I always ask people if they think that cows commit suicide every morning at the front door of McDonalds, etc.
“. . .safe to use”????!
Isn’t the whole point that it’s not “safe” for the convict? It’s supposed to be an execution, the whole purpose in administering the drug is that it is not safe in the radical sense of causing death.
The drugs are plainly safe for those administering them or standing around, as there are no cases of vets or onlookers dying or falling ill from putting down a dog, cat, or horse.
Euthanasia in a Veterinary clinic is a very humane death. The drugs are reliable and fast acting. Usually the owners/pet parents watch as the injections are given, and most take comfort in the ease of their pet’s passing. I don’t understand why anyone would think that a drug that is humane for our pets wouldn’t be equally humane for the dispatch of convicted criminals.
