First Health Care, Next the Food Supply
The American Thinker ^ | November 17, 2010 | Michael Geer

Posted on 11/17/2010 2:09:17 AM PST by Scanian

Just because the duck is lame doesn't mean it can't still do terrible damage to American freedom. Our new Congress, especially the new House, isn't yet seated, and this current Congress can still wreak terrible havoc on our rights if not stopped.

Case in point: Senate Bill 510, believed to be coming to the floor Wednesday, November 17 (pending). This is the food safety version of ObamaCare. Reading the thing will make your head hurt for all its cognitive dissonance. Trying to winnow out its complexity and hidden empowerments is stultifying.

Introduced by Dick Durbin of Illinois, the bill has moved through the usual phases of amalgamation and deal-making. The monstrosity advancing to the floor on Wednesday is not so much "food safety" as it is the decadence of the rights of small farmers, hobbyist food producers, garden-variety farmers markets, and your average small producer of foodstuffs. Under the rubric of safety, this Senate proposes a bill that establishes such new and sweeping powers over how you and I produce and consume foodstuffs that even the Pew Charitable Trusts are calling S510 a clear and present danger. National Health Freedom says,

"It is a dangerously broad regulatory bill giving extensive discretionary power to the FDA over the entire food supply chain without proper checks and balances to avoid abuse of power;

"It would impose one-size-fits-all-regulations on thousands of small and mid-sized farmers, small-scale local farms and food producers, and would drastically burden, to extinction, basic natural and organic food suppliers, thus endangering the lives of Americans who depend on local wholesome foods..."

Thanks for that very nice list of traitors. We’ll use that list amongst others in the next couple of years I’m certain.

Don't you people understand? The ultimate goal of the progressives is to make sure that every resident of the United States gets the exact same food each meal. If you can't buy food, you will need to use the government vouchers. This is the only equitable solution. Nobody deserves any more food than the next person. It is the ultimate egalitarianism. Obama and his cronies are bringing it to America.

Thanks SEmom. I will be calling this morning.

We have been talking about retiring back in Ms. one day to grow perennials, cut flowers, herbs, blueberries and elderberries(among other things). It’s been my life-long dream and I’ll be damned if government is going to destroy it! I’ve waited all of my life to be able to pursue it and had just started taking the first steps to put the plan into action. We need to also watch what the government is trying to do with our water supply as well. They are trying to ‘nationalize’ all water sources.

We have to take our counry back from these monsters!

...and people actually vote FOR these control freaks..?

In both the republican and democratic party elites, who have been bought and paid for by international finance and corporations, set policy and dole out campaign $$.

Hence the choice is often between two evils, and while people often vote against the greater evil, they are still voting for evil. Look at our last presidential election a choice between a Manchurian president and a Manchurian candidate - both for bailouts, nationalized health care, amnesty for the ~ 40 million illegal aliens in the US, cap and trade, LOST ....

Phone calls and letters had no effect regarding Obamacare and surely will not affect their vote on this. Yeah but nov. 2 had not happened at that time. If they ignore us like they have in the past they have 11-2 to remind them of the consequences! CALL

I remember this bill from months ago- but the let has so overwhelmed (deliberately) the country with various nightmares it’s hard to keep up.

I’m with you- touch my gardens or tell me what I can grow and you’ll see the infamous “hell hath no fury”...

Seems like that was tried once before...wasn’t it in CAMBODIA back in the ‘70’s? Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, Killing Fileds and all that.

Thank you for posting the seven out of 12 REPUBLICAN co-sponsors. Every American needs to know the ENEMY of our freedoms whether there is an “R”, “D”, or “I” after their name. Russia and China allows its citizens to grow food. I plan on expanding my summer garden. At this point, I am so ticked that I may till the entire front yard and plant produce. My land, my freedom to do with it as I choose. I wish I could wake up from this nightmare. Just a thought.

So far, it looks like there is a House version that differs somewhat from the Senate version...

Next step is to get it through the Senate. Then reconciliation with the House.

This might be a bigger test for McConnell and Boehner that earmarks.

“every resident of the United States gets the exact same food each meal...”

You can control any living thing by controlling their food. Plain and simple. People won’t have the energy to balk or demonstrate when they are worried about their next meal or how they are feeding their children. I remember being told by former Eastern Europeans that their parents would wait in line for hours to receive a moldy head of cabbage and they were grateful since they were able to eat that night. This bill is plain EVIL.

I also heard that ObamaCare has in it that if you sell anything over $600 on EBay Craigslist Yard Sale????? Obama wants a cut? Please tell me I heard this wrong? How can Obama regulate this? Will the government watch yard sales all over the country? It is insane!

When my wife and I moved back (for me) My wife is from La. It was the first time I had a chance to have a garden. My own land my own hard work and my own satisafaction of growing what I wanted! No one will take this enjoyment from me. There are plenty of FReepers gardening and saving seeds who will share seeds or cuttings. We just need to be able to keep in touch with each other just in case the Gov. Shuts the internet down!

The neat thing for the government is that the training wheels for this have already been installed - FOOD STAMPS > 42,000,000 today.
