St. Louis tops list of most dangerous US cities

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — St. Louis overtook Camden, N.J., as the nation's most dangerous city in 2009, according to a national study released Sunday.

The study by CQ Press found St. Louis had 2,070.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 429.4. That helped St. Louis beat out Camden, which topped last year's list and was the most dangerous city for 2003 and 2004.

Detroit, Flint, Mich., and Oakland, Calif., rounded out the top five. For the second straight year, the safest city with more than 75,000 residents was Colonie, N.Y.

The annual rankings are based on population figures and crime data compiled by the FBI. Some criminologists question the findings, saying the methodology is unfair.

Greg Scarbro, unit chief of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, said the FBI also discourages using the data for these types of rankings.

How many were raised without fathers married to and supporting their mothers? Unmarried childbearing, incentivized by the precepts of the Great Society, has produced destructive consequences. Rev. MLK,Jr., opined that LBJ’s Great Society would destroy what remained of the black family.

"Crime is based on a variety of factors. It's based on geography, it's based on poverty, it's based on the economy..."

B.S. It's based on the percentage and absolute numbers of Negro and Latin males aged 14-45 behaving as unconscionable animals and roaming urban areas in packs to rape, rob, murder, and commit other assorted acts of mayhem.

I remember watching some piece on Camden years ago. An RC priest
was complaining that the new sewage plant was going in
Camdem, and he said something like "...and I can see them all
smiling, flushing their toilets, sending their "cr@p" to Camden..."

I was thinking, you have a useful construction project going in,
that will continue to provide decent paying jobs, and you're
complaining?

I bet it raised property values in the area.

I would like to see a correlation coefficient for percentage and absolute numbers of Negro and Latin males aged 14-45 versus violent crime rate.

I bet you can't find it anywhere. It's not PC.

St. Louis, Camden, Detroit, Flint and Oakland. Now let’s see....what exactly do these cities have in common??!! Ah HA...THAT’S it!!! Large, suburban, middle class white populations!!! Yep. That MUST be the problem.

The downtown area is fine, its the northside of the city that is an absolute craphole. It is just a matter of crossing one street on the northern edge of the city and the demographics change considerably.

East St.Louis is across the Mississippi so it really doesn`t count when you consider the downtown area.

Funny thing about STL, back in the late 1980’s, friends and I would go to the Card’s games and the last time I was on downtown STL was 1989 for “The Who” concert at the old Busch stadium. At the time, I stayed at what was the Holiday Inn (now Ramada) off of I-70 and Lindbergh (US67). I noticed the area change alot ! At the time, was a nice area but was through there in 1996 and noticed some decline. Between downtown STL and Lindbergh, we stopped at a Shell station and my wife needed to use the bathroom. I noticed the characters in the neighborhood and told her, no bathroom stop. I finished pumping gas and got out ! We stopped at the already mentioned hotel and noticed the decline there as well !

Concerning the area North of the hotel, funny to notice the airport expanded a lot !

My earliest childhood memory is getting a gun stuck in my face after 3 men kicked our apartment door in on Spring & Itaska. It was a week before Christmas, and my mother was 7 months pregnant with my sister. My father never had a chance; they had obviously been casing us and knew they could overpower him.

They had him go face down on the floor with one guy holding a pistol to the back of his head, and kind of covering my mother; who was backed into a corner of the kitchen. The guy who was the “leader” had me close by with a gun at my head in case either one of them tried anything, while the third man ransacked the house of all valuables; including the presents.

I remember looking up at the gun, and noticing the bullets in the revolvers chamber; but he told me quickly to stare at the ground. And i did. The next thing i knew they were yelling at him that they’d be watching to see if he called the cops, and one guy fired a shot at my mother, which grazed her in the arm. Then they were gone. I was almost 2 years old.

To paraphrase Obi-Wan Kenobi: “St. Louis City. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be well armed.”

Needless to say, i’m a 2nd amendment fan.

I was raised in the Benton Park neighborhood (Missouri Ave)back in the ‘40s. In the summer, a few times we took quilts and went to the park to sleep on the grass when it was too hot to sleep in the house. I doubt it would be safe to do that now. A recent drive down Cherokee St, where we used to shop, was frightening. When I was in high school my sister and I could take the public bus just about anywhere at night and our parents didn’t have to worry. Those days are gone forever.
My family is elderly and disabled and they still live in south St Louis city so I must spend alot of my time there. A huge contingent (55,000) of Bosnian muslims now live in south city thanks to Bill Clinton. So far the Bosnians have been OK neighbors with the exception of the 107 ft. minaret they constructed a few blocks from my folks-which is like a stab in the eye to me.

I believe it was a clean sweep for the Democrats, slots 1 - 5.

I drove through East St. Louis once. Lots of boarded-up, overgrown buildings and burned-out cars. Spooky, spooky place.
