CHERSKY, Russia – The Russian scientist shuffles across the frozen lake, scuffing aside ankle-deep snow until he finds a cluster of bubbles trapped under the ice. With a cigarette lighter in one hand and a knife in the other, he lances the ice like a blister. Methane whooshes out and bursts into a thin blue flame.
Gas locked inside Siberia's frozen soil and under its lakes has been seeping out since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. But in the past few decades, as the Earth has warmed, the icy ground has begun thawing more rapidly, accelerating the release of methane — a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide — at a perilous rate.
Some scientists believe the thawing of permafrost could become the epicenter of climate change. They say 1.5 trillion tons of carbon, locked inside icebound earth since the age of mammoths, is a climate time bomb waiting to explode if released into the atmosphere.

It is to those who have no sense of history, no understanding of chemistry and absolutely no understanding of climate science. These people remind me of a 5 year old who just discovered something they think is magical and want to tell everybody about it.....
You can go to many marshes, ponds and small lakes and do this. As plant matter decays methane is created from the decomposition process, its nature at work.
I don’t know that the volumes produced would be worth the cost of capturing it, but someone could look into the feasibility of it. Greenies would probably shut it down, as destroying the planet.

Why don’t these same scientists go to the Amazone region and measure the production of methane gas per square mile. Don’t they know that wherever vegetation undergoes the rotting process, methane is a byproduct.
Even the idiot scientists themselves will become methane sources some day.

It’s useless to try to introduce logic into the psyches of the earth worshippers, but it makes sense to capture the methane, if possible, refine it as necessary and let people use it meet their needs. This way, there is control over its introduction into the “climate”. (sigh)

Yes, just imagine if millions of square miles of land now virtually locked up by ice and snow most of the year in Canada and Russia were suddenly habitable. Oh, what a horrible thought. (smirk)

True, though it is enjoyable to get them wound up.
I can’t say for certain, but I would doubt that methane produced from marshes/ponds would be economically feasible to recover.
In the arctic tundra, there are methane hydrates that form below ground. Basically they are a mixture of frozen methane gas and water/ice. (You can observe a similar phenomenon if you put a gas tank outside in the winter and slightly crack the vent. Hydrates will form around the vent as vapors escape, mix with water vapor in the air and freeze.)
Greenies try and claim that because of globalwarming/climatechange/abruptclimatedisruption/etc, the permafrost is melting and more methane gas is liberated to the atmosphere and we are going to die a painful death quicker because of it. A down-ward spiral of doom. There could be feasible ways to drill and recover this, that would be economically viable.
I work in the Arctic, trust me, its cold :-)
