Senate Republicans on Saturday voted against extending the Bush tax cuts to only the middle class in a pair of votes Democrats are seizing to paint the GOP as guardians of the rich.
The Senate voted 53-36 to extend all expiring tax cuts on individuals with incomes of less than $200,000 a year and married couples making less than $250,000 -- seven shy of the required 60 to advance.
The other proposal, which drew opposition from White House officials, would have renewed them for all tax filers with incomes of $1 million or less. That also failed in a 53-36 vote.

“They say there is no such thing as a dumb question, so I will ask away.
If no legislation is passed in the lame duck session regarding tax rates, can the new congress pass legislation that would be retroactive to Jan.1 2011? If they can with their new numbers, then the burden would be placed directly on Obama would it not?”
*************************************************************
Sure, the new congress could attempt this. The problem is, there wouldn’t be enough votes in the senate to override the Marxist president’s veto.
“I believe most jobs are created by small businesses and most small business owners are not rich enough to get hit by the tax increase voted down.”
Oh, yes. Yes, they are. Most ‘small business’ owners are worth about $500K on paper to the government. The tax cuts cut them off at the knees at half of their net worth!
I think you wandered into the wrong forum, Sweetheart, LOL!
Your first post was to me on this subject? You joined like two minutes ago, LOL!
Beat it.
LOL! Her ONLY post was to you.
You are sadly mistaken. But "taxing the rich" -- i.e. punishing them -- is expected to do exactly what for the country?
Will it cause them to create jobs?
Will it cause them to undertake more economic activity?
Will it improve the situation of the poor?
Will it cause them to retract their greedy claws from the oppressed proletariat, allowing the masses to achieve a socialist utopia?
It will do none of these things.
So, why do it?
Force the Øne to give everyone a tax hike, and then pin it decisively on him.
Bingo! Thank you, thank you, thank you...!
Why can't any Republicans in Congress be this cogent and speak up?
State that Republicans want the Bush era tax cuts made permanent - forever. DemocRats want them ALL to expire (make no mistake).
Why not split the difference between "forever" and "now?"
Good for the GOP!!!!
More RINOs awaiting their own kickback from Uncle Sugar!
No Republican Senator voted t to bring this this piece of pure Marxism to the floor . Hence this progregressive income tax raise was killed by no Republican Senator voting for it.Democrats needed 60 votes to bring it to the floor.
Is that what you were looking for to blame Republicans.Look elsewhere.
You people have little understanding of how Congress works so you fall for the liberal mainstream media slander against Republicans. When you find yourself agreeing with the liberal mainstream media that Repubblicans are no good then it's time to check your premises.

You slander Republicans for what, democrat?
Republicans stopped this by not single Republican Senator voting for this to come to the floor.
Republicans have to be applauded for this.
Have you all no idea what the media and democrats are doing?
Have you all no idea that a progressive income tax is one of the 10 goals of Marxism/communism?
And that is what democrats intended to do with this, raise taxes on those making $250,000 or more . that is a progressive tax ,that is marxism/socialism/communism.
It’s fun watching the dims explode at this. From the DailyKooks: “For the first time in recent memory, progressive and conservative activists are in total agreement about something President Obama must go.”
way to go, mindless ad homniem attacks. Yeah!!!
Don’t sweat it. Tempest has been trolling this whole thread. Obvious leftist that has no understanding of economics.
Don't go confusing everyone with facts. /s
There's no cuts, just continuing the Bush-era rates. If Obama fails to do this we will have Obama Tax Increases. Everyone needs to hammer that point.
With his 17 month "recovery" and increased unemployment (9.8 that they admit) an increase in taxes is going to hurt families more than ever and may become a drag on the economy.
Two years ago we used to mock "Change we can believe in" as meaning leaving us with coins. That joke may be reality before his reelection.
Why dont we start calling this the Obama/Democrat tax hike on small businesses? What do you think will happen to payrolls when small business owners get hit with the Obama tax HIKE in January? Hmmm..?
I am NOT blaming Republicans...if anything; I believe we should CUT taxes an ADDITIONAL 10% above current levels; top to bottom.
Of course the fact that the tax bill did not pass is an excellent thing...merely saying that Obama can rely on the press to portray this as GOP mean-spiritedness in the hope that less engaged members of the electorate will rally around him. Fortunately, the broader public is more engaged than ever before and the class warfare thing, like the charge of racism, is beginning to lose its punch.
Great catch there. What kind of bait are you using? I need some.
