The world's largest army? America's hunters
Redding.com ^ | December 6, 2010

Posted on 12/06/2010 5:09:18 PM PST by SJackson

I don't spend my fall weekends tramping around the woods in pursuit of a buck, but a lot of my friends and neighbors do.

This blogger adds up all the hunters in just a handful of states, and comes to a striking conclusion:

The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great. There were over 600,000 hunters.

Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay.

But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia, and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.

His point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

Prior to Nov '08 I owned one gun.

Currently, eight out of eleven are semi-auto's.

I used to have some guns. Then I lost them in a tragic boating accident.

Would you like to borrow my boat?

That’s Michigan??? I would have sworn it was a bayou in Louisiana.

It is similar. No bald cypress trees and Spanish moss, though.

You know, of course, this was the basic idea behind how the Swiss maintained neutrality in WWII. They were all armed to the teeth and promised to shoot at German officers first.....

What are the proportions? Hunters to population.

The Warsaw Uprising in 1943 was begun with 11 guns the Jews managed to find/steal.

And from that start, they held out longer than France.

“How were two home-grown Moslems (one a juvenile!) able to terrorize Washington for so long?”

It’s easier to find 700,00 soldiers than two terrorists. Strategy. Strategy. Strategy.

I’m a little hazy on the details, it’s been 7 or 8 years, but I remember when Illinois failed to implement a ban, da mare instituted one for city employees in Chicago. No .50 cal. No exceptions. Any LEO who was a reinactor better not show up on the Forth of July at the Chicago Historical Society, or anywhere else, with anything over .49, else jeopordize his job. I hope they resolved the issue, but don’t recall. I’m sure there’s a Tory out there somewhere trying to hit a pilot with his Brown Bess, the government is protecting us.

Hunters aren’t really the issue, gunowners are. And I’m glad the government can’t provide an answer. Most estimates are that around 50% of American households own a firearm, maybe a little less, maybe more, ant that there are 250,000 to 300,000 firearms out there.

You could also easily add on those of us that own guns, but don’t hunt. If I had to guess, I’d say we are 25% of the overall total, if not higher.

Probably triple that.

Add me to that number and I can provide arms to about 15 other unarmed folks.

And as for my good friend's nephew, his only hobby is buying rifles and hand guns, modifying them and experimenting with his own reloads.........that sucker has an armory of modified rifles that would make any hunter or gun aficionado drool and he doesn't even hunt. LOL!

I carefully read your post, “What Good Can a Handgun Do Against An Army?” I agree that if we were attacked by a foreign army this essay would apply. For the most part, those in a “Red Dawn” type of resistance could trust their comrades.

BUT...In countries that have fallen to dictatorial tyranny, the enemy isn't a foreign invader. One of the major tools a dictator uses to spread fear and to control the population is informers. I doubt that in this situation, a resistance group could grow large enough to have any effect without first being infiltrated by the dictator's informers.

What are the proportions? Hunters to population.

The more appropriate question is what is the number of gun owners per population........

The French resistance was made up of many disparate elements: Democratic types, socialists, communists, Royalists, anarchist, nationalists and many others. Yes, many of their number were fingered and turned over to the Germans, but many more were not.

Hunters aren’t really the issue, gunowners are.

Good point. Still, plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I think I remember reading that.

Skipper, respectfully, I need to decline that offer. :)

I have often said that North Dakota could take France.

OMG!

One of the best I've ever read!

And true.

One man with a rifle? Is that what you think the enemy in these places is? How about thousands with mortars, heavy machine guns, RPGs by the thousands, IEDs and suicide bombers.

One man with a rifle.

The most dangerous critter you can ever have the misfortune of crossing paths with.

And I wasn't the first one to say that.

Go get your machine gun / mortar / IED and I'll meet ya on the field.

I'll be packing one rifle. A Russian Mosin Nagant, shoots a 7.62x54 round.

No optic help, just iron sights.

At 300+ yrds, you won't have a chance to use the mortar, same for the IED, machine gun maybe - if your quick.

Tag, your it.

The point is, never underestimate what one man can do with just a rifle.

No slight intended, mind you.
