And of those who graduate, how many can read, write a complete sentence, and figure percentages?

Prov 16:26
2 Thess 3:10

Let ‘em go hungry for a while, and they’ll quickly figure out that whole “work ethic” thing.

It’s worse than you can imagine.

No,... it's not, but sadly, the rest of your points are exactly accurate.

On a related note please join us July 21 through July 24, 2011 to commemorate the 150th Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War and the Battle of First Manassas.

150 years on the dole is indeed enough.

"If they want to close the achievement gap, they need to focus on getting white and asian test scores lower."

The solution is to stop testing...everyone will be graded the same.

I am no expert on this. I do know in the early 1960’s we had a mandatory high school education for all males in VA. If you were not in the military at age 17, which required parental approval/signature, your fanny best be in class.I recall two 21 plus year olds in my senior class. One was a real disgrace to his father as his father was an Air Force O-6. Yet, at age 22 he graduated. I think mandatory graduation is the answer, as the military will not even take GED types now unless the person really scores high on the ASVAB. Good luck finding those critical MOS’s in this economy-” dropouts.” The Army does not want you. Neither do any of the other services.

Glen Beck reported last night that college students were told to get financial aid “food stamps.” Then we had the Obama education lady say all students should have free laptops and Internet. Surprising to this lady this has been tried. The result was the laptops were trashed, used by other family members, and; you tube videos were what the teens watched. Even the teachers failed to become PC literate. I am told each year to give more to our schools. They, the students and teachers do worse each year. The military would relieve any commander whose company or whatever failed. We must do the same with our teachers.

Now, I want to be positive despite the obvious negativity.I believe we-”YES WE” must demand that our federal, state, and local officials mandate that all must obtain a high school diploma as a minimum. No pass or fail. No multi language BS. No excuses. If you are 18 and have not graduated, you stay in high school until you do. If it takes wearing a “Dunce” hat-so be it.

The drop out rate where my kids go to school is 0%. Of course it is a Christian school. Tuition is approx $11,000/year which makes its cost considerably lower than the gubmint/union schools. Each to their own I guess. I also should mention that based on a general observation of the student body, the ethnic breakdown contains large components of Hispanic and Asian (25%+ for each), with a smattering of blacks to go along with the white group (less than 50%). Based on my daughter’s circle of friends, integration is very complete. There is no ethnic strife on campus at all. This school is in Los Angeles County about 20 miles from downtown. It is in an older middle class neighborhood and is not considered to be upperclass by any stretch of the imagination. Most of the kids live in two parent homes and the parents are very interested in their children’s educational progress.

“... mandate that all must obtain a high school diploma as a minimum..”

####

And, as I am sure you mean: with OBJECTIVE, measureable, non-negotiable standards of achievement.

No rubberstamp “diplomas” ala the racist John Thompson’s “enviable” Georgetown University basketball team’s “graduation” rates.

What is the drop out rate of black students at suburban schools with small black populations versus black students at urban schools filled with blacks and Latinos?

“Our failed social policies have destroyed several generations of poor black children “

That’s why I’m skeptical of the IQ=genetics claim of the Bell Curve. They can’t point to a single IQ gene or group of genes but the environment is clearly stacked up against anyone who wants to learn and excel.

Bingo. Public schooling was a good idea that doesn’t work.

I tend to be suspect of virtually any entity with the term "public" or "national" as part of the name:

Public transit
National Parks
Public Broadcasting
National Endowment for the Arts
Public option

...and that's just a smattering.

On the other hand, I still enjoy watching Jimmy Cagney in the 30's film, Public Enemy. :-)

People will still get accused of racism for simply stating facts and data.

San Francisco, with a starkingly low dropout rate of 9%, the predominant demographic group is Asian. In fact, San Fran and Hawaii are the only two places in the US where Asians outnumber whites.

And, in Oakland, where the rate is 40%, Asians are NOT the predominant race.

So, if this is the fault of the Whites, then why are Asians doing so much better than Whites? Not just here, but in general...higher per capita income, higher graduation rate, higher going to college?

US already trails by a large margin to China, in our students’ reading and math skills. In China and Japan and South Korea, competition is fierce for academics.

In the US, we embrace diversity and being policitally correct.

They embrace superiority. We celebrate mediocrity.

I cry for the spiral that liberals have taken my beautiful country down.
