David Frum’s Wrong Direction (Great Synopsis of Obama's [Marxist] Career)
National Review Online ^ | 12/9/2010 | Stanley Kurtz

Posted on 12/09/2010 2:50:03 PM PST by mojito

....Obama was an orthodox Marxist-Leninist in his early college years; that he certainly attended two socialist conferences, which converted him to community organizing; that these conferences sketched a vision of socialist-friendly political coalitions led by African-Americans who would emerge from the ranks of community organizers; that the groups, strategies, and theologies Obama spent a lifetime cultivating were presented at these conferences as the program of a modernized socialism; that Obama worked for his entire career with the very stealth-socialist community organizers in Chicago who had authored the political strategy presented at those early socialist conferences; that these stealth-socialist community organizers sponsored Obama’s political rise; that Obama supported these socialists by channeling foundation money their way for years; that Obama worked closely with this stealth-socialist community-organizing network throughout his time as an Illinois state senator; that Obama has hidden, and particularly in the case of ACORN, bluntly lied about these radical connections; that the tactics, policies, and strategies crafted by Obama’s stealth-socialist organizing mentors have guided his entire political career, including his presidency; and that the same stealth-socialist community organizers who inspired and sponsored Obama’s political career advised his 2008 presidential campaign and continue to work with him at shaping and marshaling support for his presidential agenda.

The more one has paid for a forgery, the more one defends it in the face of all the evidence to the contrary.

This is where Frum is stuck. He can’t admit that he was wrong.

What happened to Frum? He wasn’t always a jerk such as this?

Frum caught a bad case of Palin Derangement Syndrome in 2008 and he's been off the reservation ever since.

What are you talking about? NR spent years purging and smearing anyone who didn't toe the party line. What's left? A bunch of lightweight neocon weenies who are unreadable, even if you do agree with everything they spew.

NR was a dynamic intellectual publication and the soul of conservatism for two generations. Now, it's like the print version of Sean Hannity’s show.

First, they came for the paleocons ....

‘What are you talking about? NR spent years purging and smearing anyone who didn’t toe the party line.’

If you are referring to Birchers and anti-Semites, yes NR has helped cleanse the conservative movement of such trash. A brilliant column by Frum, thanks for the reminder of what a mainstream, FR type conservative he used to be. A true loss to the conservative movement. Also a useful reminder of why paleocons no longer are part of conservatism.

This is an excellent piece, nicely written. My only reservation is that Kurtz fails to note that “socialism” is little more than a politician’s weasel word for “communism”, or at the very least for “communism-lite”.

By the way, isn’t Medved a fan of that “No Labels” nonsense?

Marxist, sure. But Leninist? Does Stanley even know what an "orthodox Marxist-Leninist" was?

"Trotskyite" might be a closer description of Ubama.

And who's to say Obama needed the conferences to be converted to community organizing?

Good point. Ubama has always seen things in terms of a Third World socialist. His father was an African Marxist and his mother a leftist slut. He dropped right into those socialist "conferences" like he belonged there all along.

Thank you for your post!

Frum is dead to me, and I love Stanley Kurtz!

Frum has no principles, but Kurtz has ‘em coming out of so many different bodily orifices that it ain’t funny.

It was a miserable tirade by a snarky party hack. At least symbolically, it marked the end of NR as a serious publication. This was the height of Bushbotism. Now, the magazine was the officially property of “heavyweights” like Jonah Goldberg and Ramesh. Yawn. Pro-abortion/pro-$1 a gallon fed tax on gasoline / “Christianity caused the Holocaust” Charles Krauthammer was a NR conservative. Korean War vet Bob Novak was “unpatriotic”.

Frum is a miserable weasel who is reaping what he sowed. And I miss the days when I would get/give NR subscriptions for Christmas.

I realize that Oregon isn't the center of the conservative world, but there are still active John Birchers here. About a year before the last Presidential campaign kicked off I attended an "End the Fed" rally and several of the people there were from the JBS.

I'm not familiar with the history of the JBS in any detial. I'd only really heard of them mentioned in passing as a popular group at the height of the McCarthy era who were adamently anti-communist. Why do you call them trash?

BTW: I should be clear that the people pictured above were at the 'End the Fed' rally, but are not necessarily the JBS members. I remember one of them was a woman, don't know about any others.

One, their analysis of the situation, including the idea that Eisenhower was deliberately aiding the communists to take over the world, because he was an agent of that party, was so foolish that it damaged anti-communism, by sending us after non-exist enemies and making us look like idiots.
Two, after the Goldwater campaign, they came out for George Wallace, and fought against Goldwater Conservatives, allying themselves with liberal Republicans to make sure Goldwater Republicans were defeated. A prominent example of this was in New Jersey, where the state Goldwater Chairman was smeared as an anti-semite (his mother was Jewish), by Birchers he had promoted within the organization, who formed an alliance with Rockefeller Republicans to take over the state and county YR organizations. There were public purge trials in which the conservatives were not actually called anti-semites, but just of being a part of the conservative group (called ‘Rat-Finks’). Peoples careers were ruined because of these charges. It is part of the reason the NJ GOP has been so liberal since then.
