Like father, like son. Sex-scandal-scarred Oscar winner Joseph Brooks' slacker son was slapped with attempted-murder and strangulation charges last night in the death of his swimsuit-designer ex-girlfriend at the posh Soho House hotel, police said. Nick Brooks, 24 -- whose dad was indicted last year on 82 counts of sexually abusing young actresses -- was booked after nearly two days in police custody, where he was grilled by cops and body-searched for DNA and other evidence. The felony strangulation charge is new to the New York penal code. Just eight days old, the provision is aimed at domestic abusers whose victims do not sustain serious neck injuries. Brooks' father, Joseph -- who won an Oscar for composing the song "You Light Up My Life" -- is fighting charges he sexually assaulted 11 starlets.

What can I say?

They do it because they know they can often get away with it. Did you read where the father is still out of jail after posting bail... And faking a stroke, according to prosectors ??? Sound like the father/ son team in the Joran case? Does to me ...

82 counts of assault.

Wasn't it Epstein, Bill Clinton's BFF in Palm Beach who regularly enticed dozens of 14 year olds to his multi multi million dollar residence saying "Bring your friends, the younger the better" for years, and then who NEVER spent a single day in jail???

Justice, in the new America.

Peons, meet your new overlords ...

Indeed, like father like son. Both feel entitled since both are slacker / rich.

I’d often wondered about the inclusion of the morally relativistic “it can’t be wrong, if it feels so right” in this otherwise wholesome ditty. Christian songwriters don’t always get everything theologically correct, but normally misbehavior of this kind is not behind the discrepancies.

Wiki says: Indictment In June 2009, he was accused of sexual assault by four different women over incidents that occurred between March and May 2008. He allegedly lured the women to his apartment to audition for movie roles.[1] He was indicted on June 23, 2009. He is currently being tried by Manhattan's state Supreme court for 91 counts and charged with rape, sexual abuse, criminal sexual act, assault, and other charges.[2] The grand jury heard more evidence on December 17, 2009, because two new witnesses came forward. As of December 2010, his trial had not yet begun.[3].

Interesting..

what about when the victim goes unconscious due to lack of air ???

Is that now considered attempted murder ???

He should be charged with assaulting all who see his picture.

There are crazed people out there who think that choking adds to their sexual pleasure.

The 33 year old woman died. According to CNN her fully clothed, bruised body was found in the bathtub of the hotel.

Something is totally wrong with this picture. (Obviously.) First, why is he charged with attempted murder when the victim is, like, completely dead? He is charged under a law that is intended to increase the consequences of an assault that does not leave marks? I’m sorry, sounds Kafkaesque to me: there is no physical evidence of an assault, so therefore the charges are more serious? Why not just charge him with murder since the victim is, you know, dead.

I grew up in fablus noo yawk city, but I’m just a redneck born in the wrong place. I have a cousin who retired from the NYPD as a detective lieutenant, ending his career on the Manhattan District Attorney’s homicide squad. Sort of the Chris Noth character. (I think Chris Noth’s character may have been based on my cousin, they are similar in appearance and dress and he retired about the time the show started.) The cousin acquired a law license while “on the job” and now practices criminal law, with the bulk of his work coming from the PBA. (He was on the Amadou Diallo case, though I got the impression he had a very low opinion of the behaviour of his clients.)

I have some appreciation of the perverse nature of New York’s criminal justice system.

You obviously lack the nuanced legal mind. If the law is written clearly in plain English, we would need an order of magnitude fewer lawyers. Can’t have that, can we?

Here’s how it works: Clever lawyers are hired to write ambiguously complicated laws in legalese. Other clever lawyers are then hired to wade through the legalese, exploit the ambiguities and/or find meaning in the laws that were never intended.

Oh, and then judges, former lawyers, are then tasked to referee the two lawyers. If that isn’t a recipe for disaster I don’t know what is.

The woman is DEAD.

Only in NY could they find a way to lessen the charge against the perpetrator.

Mayor Bloomers NY, no different than Mayor Dinkins NY.

Just about all of Rudy’s NY has been extinguished.
