GOP’S CHANCES TO UNSEAT BOB CASEY? GOOD LUCK
Philadelphia Magazine ^ | 14 Dec 2010 | Chris Freind

You would think that with Pennsylvania’s Republican roots, which have run especially deep over the last several decades, freshman Democratic senator Bob Casey would be vulnerable in 2012.

You would be wrong, and the reason is simple civics. Incumbents don’t lose unless they’re challenged by viable, first-tier candidates, as the Senate elections in Nevada and Alaska proved. And, as of now, there are none to challenge Casey. Whether that changes in the next year is anyone’s guess, but the mere fact that the GOP finds itself in this position speaks volumes about how it builds its “bench.” Translation: it doesn’t.

*****

Pennsylvania’s Republican power was on full display when Ronald Reagan chose three cabinet officials not just from the same state, but the same county! Montgomery County produced Drew Lewis (who fired the striking air traffic controllers), Alexander Haig, and Richard Schweiker. Since then, it’s been all downhill for the Montco GOP, with infighting and strife resulting in minority status in the state’s third largest county.

The PA GOP had a big win in Nov due primarily because of the Tea Party and other grassroots organizations. They are doing a terrible job building the party. The Tea Party cease fire on the PA GOP will only last so long.

I am thinking it won’t matter. I am thinking the Federal Mess is unfixable at this point and it will be up to 34 states to call a con-con.

Stupid article. The PA GOP doesn’t have a “bench” yet 12 of the 19 US representatives are Republicans, along with the vast majority of its state senators and a majority of its state house representatives. The PA GOP has been bad at registering new voters and that has turned Montgomery County competitive for the Dems where it used to be solid GOP country. But I’d bet that a good challenger will arise to challenge Casey.

No big news that some MSMediot does not think any GOP candidates will be top shelf. What matters is what kind of year is it, who you nominate and how good a campaign they run. Casey was elected in 2006 a bad year for the GOP.

Heck Santorum might be able to beat him next go around.

I’ve got some ideas, but must keep my powder, and theirs, dry.

Santorum wants to be president and secondly he lost his own seat because of his support for Specter.

I doubt that he will be able to rise to either occassion.

Padding the tax bill with billions in ethanol subsidies and other special-interest giveaways was surely evidence that you are right. It will take a lot more than new faces and bright promises to fix this ungodly mess.

Santorum jumped the shark. First with Specter and with his embrace of the execrable Slick Willard.

Former Gov. Mark Schweiker needs to run! I know the guy who runs the Schuylkill County Republicans-—where I live-— and he’s saying the same thing. He’d be our best bet.

Name recognition is not necessarily the most important quality. If you are catching that I am not a fan of Ricky’s, you’d be correct.
