CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan lawmakers granted President Hugo Chavez broad powers Friday to enact laws by decree, undermining the clout of a new congress that takes office next month with a bigger opposition bloc.

Chavez opponents condemned the move as a power grab, saying the law will be a blank check for the leftist leader to rule without consulting lawmakers. ..

A new congress goes into session Jan. 5 with an opposition contingent large enough to hinder approval of some types of major laws. Opposition lawmakers say decree powers now give Chavez a blank check to rule autocratically while ignoring the congress.

Chavez has argued he needs decree powers to fast-track funds to help the victims of recent floods and landslides, and also to hasten Venezuela's transition to a socialist state.

Yeah, why didn’t Pelosi and Reid think of this for their lame duck session?

I am sure they thought of it till Obama ran them over with the bus.

Chavez also got in because he was protected by the international left, including those in our State Dept. When he was out at the airport on the tarmac and the military had guns at his head, planning either to kill him or send him to Cuba, it was the US that told them to back off and basically reinstalled Chavez.

This was under Bush, who had congratulated the VZ people on getting rid of him...only to be undermined by his own (mostly Clinton hold-over) State Dept. He made changes later, but by then it was too late.

“he needs decree powers to fast-track funds to help the victims of recent floods and landslides”

Never let a good crisis go to waste, I suppose. Now where did I hear that....

Chavez gives anti-American book as gift to Obama, who accepts it happily

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez hands President Obama the book titled "The Open Veins of Latin America" by Eduardo Galeano.

The virulently anti-American book tells how for 500 years Europe and then the U.S. exploited Latin America, leaving it impoverished and governed by corrupt leaders.

It outlines how U.S. capitalistic forces purportedly raped the region's natural resources and stymied Latin America's own development, exploited trade agreements and tariffs for its own interests and victimized the people of the region in exchange for the U.S.'s industrial growth.

Obama’s State Dept/Hillary/diplomacy has really been successful, for the communists. Kissing off Nicaragua, El Salvador, Ecuador, a neutered Costa Rica, Panama ?, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil (run by the reds).

Not much democracy left in LA thanks to Obama.

Oh, we forgot. He tried to impose communism on Honduras too.

Where the hell is the CIA now that we need them?

When they finally uncover the mass graves and killing fields it will be labeled a right wing dictatorship by the media.

ANY American who has any Venezuela investments needs to dump them this year & take their losses.

The country will be in chaos before long.
